Sarah Catherine Fazekas Zirkle, 47, loving mother of Ethan James Zirkle (18) and Grayson Jay Zirkle (8) went home to be with the Lord on July 30, 2024.
Known for her friendly disposition and heart for service, Sarah will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Sarah dedicated her life to encouraging and educating children, working over twenty years in elementary education. Most recently, she was a fourth-grade teacher at Stonewall Elementary School, where she worked since 2014, previously as a first-grade teacher, and actively served the school community in a number of roles including PTA officer, team leader, site coordinator of technology, and mentor, among others. Before working at Stonewall Elementary, Sarah worked at Red Bud Elementary School, John Kerr Elementary School, and Winchester Academy.
Sarah’s dedication to service started at a young age, having participated in various domestic and international mission trips since middle school, including a trip to Rosebud Indian Reservation and Lima, Peru.
Born and raised in Pottstown, PA, a 1995 Pottstown High School graduate, Sarah made Winchester, VA her home for the past twenty years. Sarah attended Valley Forge Christian College and earned her Master’s in Elementary Education from Liberty University in 2014.
Sarah’s love for her hometown ran deep; she was a faithful Philadelphia Eagles fan, and loved the PA based TV show, “The Office.” She could often be found enjoying her favorite beverage a Diet Coke. Sarah was an avid reader, never passing up a good mystery, a love of which she passed on to her sons. Most of all, Sarah treasured every moment spent with her sons, and modeled God’s love to them daily.
In addition to her sons, Sarah is survived by her parents, John (Jay) and Sherrie Fazekas, brother, Nathan and sister-in-law Marie Fazekas and their children, Joshua, Tyler, Avery, and Kylie and numerous extended family and friends that became family.
A visitation will be held for Sarah on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, from 11am to 1pm with a service to be conducted at 1p all held at Winchester Church of God. Interment will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.

I taught at Winchester Academy with Sarah and she was a delight to work with. When I reflected on what I learned from Sarah, how her life touched mine… I realized she impacted me by modeling the practice of meditating on God’s word in practical everyday life. She modeled for all of us how to set our minds and hearts on God’s truth in the midst of anxiety and struggles by reciting scripture and keeping it in front of our eyes so that it was in our minds and hearts. She made us teachers little cards with verses about truths about God and truth about our identity in Christ so we could keep them on our walls or mirrors to remind ourselves of these important truths. As I have faced anxieties and struggles in life I have been able to implement these practices and I’m thankful for Sarah’s example in this. The way she lived impacted others and I’m thankful for that. I hope we can all practice this as we struggle with how to continue life without her here with us.

My preschool merged with Winchester Academy 15 years ago and I was blessed to have met her. Ethan was in my 3 yr. old class and our friendship began there and continued throughout the years while employed at WA but sadly lost touch. I remember Sarah being filled with joy, love, kindness, and patience. She was easy to talk to and helped me through some trying times but always had a positive and Godly answer. Her love for God surely shined through. We have lost a bright soul and she will be dearly missed. I pray for for her family and friends that God’s love will surround them, clear their minds to remember the memories that bring happiness, to continue her legacy through showing Christ’s love and keeping her memory alive. She traveled her journey here on earth with a Godly manner but now she is in His presence wrapped in all His glory.

Such a huge loss that I am sad we strayed away from more frequent visits as we grew up. But my favorite memory with Sarah was when she became my co-pilot on a work road trip to VA Beach when she was 12-14 years old, somewhere in that age group. But a 6 hour drive and all we listened to was her favorite album from N’Sync. Or was it New Kids? They all sounded the same to me! But Sarah loved them so we sang along and had a great week together. I’m heartbroken for you Jay, Sherrie, Nate and family and especially Ethan and Grayson. Love you all.

I am deeply sorry for the family of Sarah. I just lost my Mama a few mo ths ago and can say unfortunately I know just how truly hard this is, unexpected or not. Though this should have NEVER happened. Please know I am praying for you every-day and sending you all the love I posses in me from the bottom of my heart and soul. God has her safe and at peace to never again be in pain. He will Carrie your family when you feel you can't walk and will continue to light your way and guide you. It goes without saying, this never gets easier but we continue on, in the worst times when we want to give up for our loved one who's now not an Angel on earth but in heaven above us. Don't forget to watch for their signs and know they never really leave us.. There's just a veil between us, Gods not ready to unmask and pull back yet for us. But know as my Mama Kelly Crosen does , she will talk to you until she can hold you with her in heaven. The signs are truly everywhere and they come out of nowhere. Stay opened mi ded or you'll miss them. I will be praying for your family always and pray for the right actions to be taken. None will do justice but may bring piece of mind and calm your souls one day just a little. Be as strong as her and stay you always. I allowed myself to become engulfed with pain and anger. It changed me for a time and I'm nkw hearing my mama more than ever trying to bring me back. Don't go down. That wrong path. They never wanted that for us though I fully understand the anger part of this. I would be. Myself and am still, for you and for myself. May the man upstairs continue to shine his light and guide you every step of the way through this now unknown journey ahead. I stand behind you and beside you . I know Sarah is with you, as my mother is and their strength resides is us. I am truly beyond sorry ( I know none of this seems to make a difference. "I'm sorry" nor anything can be said or done to take away this pain) but please know I support your family more than you know and am here struggling with you in more ways than you know. You shouldn't be here and neither should Sarah. From the bottom of my heart and soul I am more than angry, saddened and sorry for you all, aswell as Sarah. I only wish there were better words and more I could do. Praying and sending all my love! Sarah will never be forgotten, she will forever be missed and she will remain so incredibly loved!

The boys know that you are watching them. Ethan is really taking good care of you and honoring his mom. Grayson is smiling and thinking of how you loved to tickle him. The boys are going to be ok. We love you and we miss you!

To Sarah's family, there are no words to wrap our heads around what happened to such a sweet young woman. We've know Sarah for many years, as well as Jamie, Ethan and Grayson. Sending hugs and prayers for wisdom and peace from our Father. It's never easy losing someone you love. And when it happens so unexpectedly, it seems so unreal. Knowing she's in Heaven and will wait for all of you there is what gets us through each moment without her.
With fond friendship, Dorcas & Randy Sturgill

I met Sarah 17 years ago while Teaching at Winchester Academy. She was such a light with her bright smile and humor. I have seen her around town and at Stonewall Elementary. We have remained friends on Facebook while watching our boys grow up. I had the pleasure of teaching Ethan in preschool! My Mom also got to know Sarah while being a consistent substitute for her at Stonewall Elementary the last 2 years. She loved Sarah and we will both miss her very much. We are thankful to know that she LOVED Jesus and is in his arms. We will continue to pray for her entire family and all that loved her and knew her.
