Samuel Stover Russell, age 78, of Winchester, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at Hilltop House in Winchester.

Born on August 8, 1947, in Winchester, he was the son of the late Samuel Peachie Russell and Hilda Catherine (Edwards) Russell. Sam was a 1965 graduate of James Wood High School. A proud veteran of the United States Air Force, he served his country during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, Sam spent his career working as an assessor for Frederick County. He was a member of Bethel Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Sam lived a life full of passions and simple pleasures. An active runner and jogger, he enjoyed competing in 5K and 10K races over the years. He was an avid sports enthusiast who faithfully followed the New York Yankees, the Washington Redskins, and the Virginia Tech Hokies. Music brought him great joy, especially playing the banjo and listening to bluegrass, with Ralph Stanley being a particular favorite. He cherished the traditions of celebrating the local Apple Blossom Festival, finding quiet outdoors time spent hunting and fishing with his father and son, and spending time maintaining and relaxing at “The Cabin.”

He is survived by his son, Samuel Russell and his wife, Marsi, of Montgomery, Texas; his former wife, Donna Russell; his two beloved grandchildren, Quinn J. Russell, and Brooke M. Russell and cousins, Alice Carpenter Karrh, Rose Ann Butler Terrell, and Mary C. Butler Turner.

In addition to his parents, Sam was preceded in death by his cousin, Sandy Carpenter Organ, and his cousin, William Lee Butler.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, from 1pm to 2pm at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel. Graveside service to follow in Mount Hebron Cemetery, Rev. Dr. David Young will officiate.
