Rupert L. “Helm” Helmick
Rupert Lee Helmick, age 87, of Frederick County, Virginia, died, Monday, July 8, 2013, in Winchester Medical Center.
Helm was born in 1926, in Cherry Grove, West Virginia, the son of the late Mabel G. Ray and Mr. Helmick. He grew up in the home of the late Benny and Zernie Bennett, who raised him. He worked as a mechanic at Crown Cork and Seal, retiring in 1988. He had been a former employee of P. W. Plumbly Lumber Company in Winchester. He was a veteran serving in the United States Army Engineers during World War II as a PFC.
Helm married Norma Harper in Oakland, Maryland on May 13, 1946. She preceded him in death on January 1, 2012.
Surviving are two daughters, Wanda Smoke and husband, Holmes, of Winchester, Virginia, Wilda Jean Coogle of Bel Air, Maryland; three sons, Gary Helmick of Ocean City, Maryland, Ronnie Helmick of Winchester, Virginia, and Barry Helmick and wife, Becky, of Bunker Hill, West Virginia; thirteen grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; and one great, great grandchild; a sister, Virginia Kyle of Hinton, Virginia; and a brother, Leroy Lambert of McConnellsburg, Pennsylvania.
One grandson, a sister, Naomi Kline, and a brother, Willard Bennett, preceded him in death.
The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.
The funeral service will be conducted on at 1:00 PM on Friday, July 12, 2013, at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel with Mr. Leroy Luttrell and Reverend Eric Ferrell officiating. Interment will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park with Military Honors by VFW Post 2123 of Winchester.
Pallbearers will be Spencer Coogle, Cullen Helmick, Bo Helmick, Alden Helmick, Greg Helmick and Kevin Myers.
Honorary pallbearers will be Holmes Smoke, Fuzzy McMillan, John Garrison, and Jay Russell.
Memorial contributions may be made to the donor’s choice.
