Rogers Murray Fred, Jr., 90, of Frederick County, Virginia died Sunday, October 16, 2016 at Spring Arbor Assisted Living.
Mr. Fred was born on September 30, 1926 in Washington, D.C., the son of the late Ethel and Rogers Murray Fred, Sr. He attended St. James School in Maryland and graduated from Washington and Lee University in 1950. Mr. Fred was Vice President of Browning and Baines, Inc., a wholesale coffee company owned with his father in Washington D.C. He retired in 1972. He attended Church of Our Saviour Oatlands in Leesburg, Virginia. Mr. Fred was one of the country’s most knowledgeable numismatists, assembling one of the only collections in existence of uncirculated U.S. pattern coins. He was frequently called upon to examine and appraise rare coin collections throughout the United States.
His wife, Barbara Stewart Fred; whom he married on October 4, 1952, preceded him in death on June 7, 1982.
Surviving is daughter, Leslie A. Fred of Leesburg, Virginia; son, Dr. Rogers M. Fred, III and wife, Kimberly S. Fred of Stephenson, Virginia; and grandson, Asa Hugh Shepherd Fred of Stephenson, Virginia.
A private graveside service was conducted Thursday at Union Cemetery, 323 N. King Street, Leesburg, Virginia with Reverend James A. Basinger officiating.
