Robert MacArthur Smith Sr.
Mr. Robert MacArthur Smith Sr., 67, of Winchester, Virginia, died Monday, May 24, 2010 in Winchester Medical Center. Robert’s life would seem too short to many, but those who were touched by him understood that the quality of existence far exceeds the quantity of time in which one lives. He has reminded us of the preciousness of life.
Mr. Smith was born in 1942, in Moorefield, West Virginia. The son of the late Justin T. and Laura Lou Bessie Smith. He attended James Wood High School and later received an Associate’s degree in Computer Science from Lord Fairfax Community College in Middletown, Virginia. Robert was a member of The Church of the Good Shepherd. He enjoyed antique cars, the outdoors, and spending time with family. He was retired from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Robert is survived by his wife, Mary, whom he married on February 28, 1962 in Funkstown, Maryland; a daughter, Pauli Swartwood-Haynes and her husband, Lee Haynes of Raleigh, North Carolina, and a son, Robert MacArthur Smith Jr. of New Windsor, New York. He is survived by six grandchildren, Bethany, Hally, Justin, Alayna, Julia, and Riley. Surviving siblings are Justin J. Smith, Richard W. Smith, Clemmitt T. Smith, Martha L. Newlin, Bernice M. Garris, E. Pauline Frye, B.Carolyn Brovey and Judy R. Bayliss. He was preceded in death by four siblings, Shirley M. Smith, Luthur C. Smith, Annalee Fernandez and Charles C. Smith.
The family will receive friends on Friday, May 28 from 6-8 pm at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 am on Saturday, May 29 at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, with the Reverend Vernon Bray, Reverend Hartley L. Wigfield and Reverened Jeff Barbour officiating.
Pallbearers will be Richard W. Smith Jr., Allen R. Smith, John K. Smith, Frank D. Garris, Jeffrey L. Miller, Raymond D. Smith, and Jeffrey Garris.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Church of the Good Shepherd, 645 Berryville Avenue, Winchester, Virginia 22601.
