Robert Allen “Bobby” Coontz, 86, of Winchester, Virginia, died peacefully at his home on February 27, 2015, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Bobby was born March 26, 1928 in Winchester, the son of the late Margaret Stover Coontz and John William Coontz.
Bobby lived his entire life in Winchester. He was a fifth generation master carpenter and operated the family owned woodworking shop for over 60 years. He leaves a legacy of homes, cabinetry, and fine furniture in the Winchester area.
In 1946, he joined the Marines, serving in China. Upon his return to Winchester he married Martha Ann Laise on July 29, 1950. They would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this July. Bobby was a kind and gentle soul, and had a special love for all children and animals.
Bobby is survived by his wife, Martha; son, John W. Coontz and wife Missy; daughters Robann C. Riggleman and husband Buddy, Rebecca C. Conaboy and husband Tucker, all of Winchester; Mary M. “Peggy” Coontz of Key West, Florida; and Sarah C. Price of Middletown. He is also survived by grandchildren Matthew Coontz, Eric Coontz, David Coontz, Amanda Riggleman, Molly Conaboy, John Conaboy, Peter Conaboy, William Conaboy, and Chris Price; special grandniece Wendy “Scooter” Granot; nephew Michael Calhoun; and great grandchildren Jessie Coontz, William Coontz, Cassie Coontz, David Bryan Price and Parker Price.
He was preceded in death by his sisters Martha Coontz Orndorff, Katherine “Kay” Coontz Calhoun, and Donalda Coontz Shanholtz; nephew Marion Kees; niece Judy Shanholtz; granddaughter Katie Coontz; and son-in-law David Price.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, from 6-8 PM, at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.
Funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Thursday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel with Pastor Hartley Wigfield officiating. Interment will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery.
