Richard W. Nicholas
Richard Wallace Nicholas, 93, of Winchester, Virginia, died Wednesday, March 19, 2014, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Nicholas was born in 1920, in Dewitt, Nebraska, the son of George W. and Aileen B. Nicholas. Richard served with the 8th Air Force in England and France during World War II. He received the Good Conduct Medal and Distinguished Unit Badge. He was a graduate of Nebraska Wesleyan College receiving a Bachelor’s Degree and the University of Michigan Law School where he received Juris Doctor Degree. Mr. Nicholas practiced law in Colorado from 1949-1953. Richard was later employed with General Motors with 32 years of service. Over his career he held a variety of supervisory positions retiring as the Plant Manager in Martinsburg, West Virginia.
Mr. Nicholas was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Winchester. Richard was very active serving in many leadership roles including past president of the Shenandoah Council Boy Scouts, West Virginia Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, as well as the United Way.
He married Dorothy J. Smallman on June 10, 1950, in Batavia, New York.
Surviving with his wife are his sons, Dr. Richard W. Nicholas and wife, Alison, of Little Rock, Arkansas, Robert W. Nicholas and wife, Dana, of Herndon, Virginia; one daughter, Kathryn J. Nicholas of Woodbridge, Virginia; six grandchildren, Lauren Nicholas, Katherine Nicholas, Claire Nicholas, Mary Johnson, Mark Johnson, Anne Taylor and husband, Matthew; and six nieces and nephews.
Two sisters, Lotus Nicholas, Ruth Meeks and one brother, Robert Nicholas, preceded him in death.
A service will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at First Presbyterian Church with Reverend Dr. Richard Reifsnyder officiating. Interment in Mount Hebron Cemetery will be private.
