Richard “Dick” Joseph Mayer, 88, formerly of Winchester, Virginia passed away Wednesday, October 10, 2018, at his daughter’s home in Palm Coast, Florida.
Mr. Mayer was born in 1930 in Newport, Kentucky, the son of the late Joseph and Dorothy Mayer. He spent most of his career in New York City as a toy designer, attaining numerous patents for his work, and as a scale model maker and television prop designer. He was a staunch Republican and a fanatic about Christmas. He was a veteran of the United States Army and a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church.
His wife, Margaret Mayer, whom he married June 14, 1952 in Newport Kentucky, preceded him in death.
Surviving is a daughter, Lynn Sherry (James) of Palm Coast, Florida; sons, Larry J. Mayer (Gail) of Stephens City, Virginia and Mark J. Mayer of Toms River, New Jersey; grandchildren, Melissa L. Sherry of Palm Coast, Florida, Michael J. Sherry of Yonkers, New York, Mark J. Mayer, Jr. of Seaside Heights, New Jersey, Sierra A Mayer of Seaside Heights, New Jersey, and Joseph J. Mayer of Stephens City, Virginia.
Along with his parents and his wife, Mr. Mayer was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Lee Straus.
A gathering of family and friends will be from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm on Tuesday, October 23rd, at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 3 pm at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church with Monsignor Martin McDonnell officiating.
Interment will be Wednesday, October 24th, at 12:30 pm in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, Pennsylvania.
