Raymond John Mascarelli, 79 of Cross Junction, VA, passed away on Monday, June 17, 2024, at Winchester Medical Center.

Ray was born in 1944 in Brooklyn, NY, the son of the late Patrick and Lillian Mascarelli. Ray served our county in the United States Navy as a hospital corpsman. He graduated from Columbia University. Ray retired after 42 years as a pharmacist. He proudly opened and owned Oakdale Pharmacy in Oakdale, NY for many of those years. He was a member of New Life Community Church in Sayville, NY, where he joyfully served the Lord as an elder. Most of all, Ray enjoyed spending time with his family, extended family, and close friends.

He is survived by his wife, Carol, whom he married on August 11, 1968; daughters, Denise Mascarelli, Lisa Mascarelli Bennington (Matthew); sons, James “Jim” Mascarelli (Amanda), Robert “Rob” Mascarelli (Mausam); grandchildren, Sarah Poppo, Kaitlyn Poppo, Allen Clair, Dominic “Deezel” Clair, Isla Bennington, Lana Bennington, Miles Mascarelli, Isabella Mascarelli, Mia Mascarelli, Ariana Mascarelli and Aidan Mascarelli and sisters-in-law, Gloria Mascarelli and Dianne Zawlocki.

Ray is preceded in death by his parents and his beloved brother, Robert “Bob” P. Mascarelli.

A visitation will be held for Ray on Saturday, June 22, 2024, from 5pm to 7pm with a service to be conducted at 7pm, all held at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel. Pastor Cindy Waldrep will be officiating.

I have many fond memories of my friendship with Ray. Serving together on many Tres Dias weekends, being involved in discipleship groups and Bible studies all while attending NLCC. Also enjoyable was fellowshipping over dinners at the Mascarelli home through the years as their children grew. A memory that sticks is of Ray dispensing otc medications to remedy discomforts during our trip to Israel, while I dispensed Little Debbie cakes and Candy. And how could I forget his offer to photograph, with his fancy camera, my very very early morning Giza pyramid climb with Dr. Gene Pierson only to find out he slept through our dangerous conquest. Our waving to our friend Ray from the pyramid’s peak was all in vain. Loved you anyway Ray :). And, you honored me by being my best man at mine and Kelley’s wedding. We are praying for the comfort only God can bring to the Mascarelli family and all those Ray left behind. Praying especially for Carol who we love dearly.

We are so sorry for your loss. Ray was such a dear friend when we were all serving at NLCC. We will always remember his love for the Lord and his love of vegetables—only corn and peas if we remember correctly 😊. We are praying for all of you as you grieve. May Jesus comfort you.

Carol and family, So sorry to learn of Ray’s passing. 🙏 for you and your family. We loved that he learned how to play the guitar, at a later age.
