Ray Emory Ewing, 92, of Winchester, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at Winchester Medical Center.

Born in 1933 in Stephens City, Virginia, Ray was the son of the late Frank and Hazel Ewing. Proud of his Scotch-Irish heritage, his family roots in Stephens City stretched back to 1737. He graduated from James Wood High School in 1952, among the early classes of the newly consolidated school.

Ray enlisted in the United States Navy on October 13, 1952, during the Korean War, and proudly served aboard the USS Savage (DER-386) as part of Escort Squadron 5 in Seattle, Washington. His unit’s mission was to patrol the seaward extension of the DEW Line, earning him the title of “tin can sailor.” After four years of honorable service, he was discharged on October 12, 1956.

Following his naval service, Ray married Mary Anna Layman, his partner for 50 years. Together they raised their children and created a legacy of love and integrity that continues today.

Ray began his civilian career at the Viscose Plant in Front Royal before joining the United States Postal Service. He first worked as a rural route carrier before being promoted to Postmaster in Stephens City, a role he held for many years until his retirement. His commitment to public service extended beyond his career: Ray was elected Mayor of Stephens City in 1994 and faithfully served the town for four consecutive four-year terms, holding office until 2010.

A devoted community leader, Ray was a lifelong member of Stephens City United Methodist Church and an active member of the Korean War Veterans, Chapter 313. He joined the Stephens City Lions Club in 1960 and remained a member for 65 years, earning the prestigious Melvin Jones Fellowship, one of the highest honors in the organization. In his younger years, he also volunteered with Stephens City Volunteer Fire & Rescue, serving into middle age before stepping back from active duty.

Ray cherished the traditions of his hometown, from apple butter making to community gatherings. He enjoyed antiquing and ran his shop, Daze of Yore. He was an avid gardener, skilled in chair caning, and a dedicated reader of historical works. Known as a true history buff, he cherished lifelong friendships, especially with his Navy “brothers,” who remained close companions throughout his life.

Ray is survived by his wife, Bettye, whom he married on August 7, 2010; his daughter, Pamela Ewing Janney (Becky) of Richmond, VA; his son, Michael Ray Ewing (Tierney) of Arlington, VA; and his grandson, Alexander Michael Ewing of Annapolis, MD.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved first wife, Mary Anna Layman Ewing; sisters Frances Carbaugh, Betty York, and Janet Schaumburg; and brothers Arthur Ewing, Thomas Ewing, and Donald Ewing.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, November 15, 2025, at 2:00 p.m., followed by a service at 3:00 p.m., all at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel. Pastors John Lock and Jack Keep will officiate.
