Paul Leo Tomney, Jr., 89, died Friday, November 22, 2013, in Raleigh, NC. He was born in Winchester, VA, to Paul Leo and Carter May Stryker Tomney. He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Barbara Beatty Tomney.
Paul graduated from Handley High School with the Class of 1942 and enlisted in the Army Air Force serving with the 8th Air Force, 487th Bomb Group. He served with distinction in completing over 30 missions in the European Theater receiving the Purple Heart and other honors.
With his wife, he owned and operated the Copper lamp Motel and Civil War Museum in Kernstown, VA. He was employed at O’Sullivan’s and for 18 years as a contractor.
Paul is survived by two daughters, Ann Allen of Raleigh, NC and Debbi Kitzmiller (Joe) of Vinton, VA; 8 grandchildren, Robert Allen and Leigh Allen of Raleigh, NC, Megan Anderson of Buckley, WA, Anne Bowman of Henderson, NV, Jason Kitzmiller of San Diego, CA, Kris Kitzmiller of St. George, UT, Paul Kitzmiller and Joe Kitzmiller of Tucson, AZ; 11 great grandchildren and one step-great grandchild.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, November 26, 2013, at 11:00 AM in the Mount Hebron Cemetery, Winchester, VA.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Macular Degeneration Foundation or the National Parkinson’s Foundation.
Local arrangements to be handled by Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.
