Mitchell “Mickey” “Mitch” Lee Newlin, Sr., of Cross Junction, Virginia, died June 11, 2016 at Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Newlin was born in Clarke County, Virginia in 1942, the son of the late Simon P. Newlin, Sr. and Myrtle V. Newlin. He was a veteran, having served the Navy and Army Reserves during the Vietnam war. He worked as Power Control Technician for FEMA/Homeland Security. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church. He enjoyed bowling, was an avid reader, and he enjoyed hunting and fishing. On top of all of his favorite past times, he was always working on new inventions. Most especially, above all else, he loved spending time with his family, especially with his grandchildren who adoringly called him their “Pop Pop”.
He married Janet Newlin on July 13, 1968 at the Stephenson United Methodist Church, of Stephenson, Virginia.
Surviving with his wife are his three sons, Mitchell “Mitch” L. Newlin Jr. (Carol), Mark D. Newlin, and Michael “Mikie” J. Newlin (Crystal); seven grandchildren, Kaitlyn B. Garrison (Kyle), Amber D. Payne, Levi A. Merchant, Cheyeanne R. Kerr, Jacob M. Newlin, Ethan I. Newlin, and Markus P. Newlin; two great-grandchildren, Hunter Garrison and Alaina Garrison; sister, Janet I. Shands; brother, Simon “Buddy” P. Newlin Jr. (Vicki); as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Newlin was also preceded in death by his step-father, Grantham Affleck.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 15, 2016 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Omps Funeral Home, South Chapel.
A funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, June 16, 2016, at 11:00 AM at Omps Funeral Home, South Chapel with Pastor George Reed officiating. Entombment will follow at Shenandoah Memorial Park Mausoleum.
Pallbearers will be, Jeff Newlin, Shane Cross, Mike Lineberg, Harry Dodson, John Barr, and Kyle Garrison. Honorary pallbearers will be, Bryce Newlin and Levi Merchant.
