Mary Virginia Carson, 90, of Winchester, Virginia died Monday, March 6, 2017 at Spring Arbor Assisted Living Facility.
She was born in 1926 in Frederick County, Virginia, the daughter of the late Daisy E. and George M. Carson.
Miss Carson was a graduate of John Handley High School, Class of 1945. Following her graduation, she attended Madison College and graduated in 1947 with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Education. She returned to John Handley High School to teach chemistry and physics. In 1978 she received Teacher of the Year award. Mary was described by many as “the most dedicated teacher at Handley High School”. She served as chairman of the Science department, co-sponsor of the Science Club and Advisor to the student government. Mary was active in The Winchester Historical Society and Teachers Association.
Preceding her in death was a brother, John Carson.

A gathering of friends will be held on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel followed by a Celebration of Life Reception at Omps Funeral Home Reception Center. Interment at Mount Hebron Cemetery will follow the service.
Serving as pallbearers will be Dennis Hasten, Edward Touchstone, George Craig, III, Dr. Rick Leonard, Jonathon Wilson, and Dr. John Capehart.
