Mary K. Armstrong

Mary K. Armstrong was born on April 26, 1947, in Zanesville, Ohio, the daughter of Esther and David Dix. She earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Miami University of Oxford, Ohio in 1965, and a Master’s Degree in Reading from Eastern Michigan University in 1972.

Mary K. married Dr. John H. Armstrong on June 29, 1968, in Zanesville, Ohio, and remained happily married for 45 years.

Surviving with her husband are sons, Dr. Andrew J. Armstrong and wife, Dr. Sarah Armstrong of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Matthew C. Armstrong of Greensboro, North Carolina; daughter, Katherine E. Armstrong and husband Tate Massingill of Ashburn, Virginia; sister, Susan Clymer and husband, Carl Clymer of Atlanta, Georgia; three grandchildren, Hannah, Ian and Drew Armstrong of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; brothers-in-law, Mike Armstrong and wife, Anne Armstrong of Naples, Florida, Barrie Armstrong and wife, Toni Armstrong of Farmington, Michigan.

Mary K. was active in education her entire life, teaching in Michigan, Georgia, Pago Pago, Samoa, Powhatan School, Millwood, Virginia and for eight years at Shenandoah University, Winchester, Virginia, where she taught English as a second language. She was involved in many civic organizations and served as President of the Board of the Shelter for Abused Women, Vice-President of the Friends of the Handley Library, Parents Board of Powhatan School, Vice-President of Frederick County Middle School P.T.O., President of Sherando High School P.T.O., Elder and active member of First Presbyterian Church and Volunteer at the Free Medical Clinic of Northern Shenandoah Valley.

Mary K.’s life was animated and enriched by the love of her husband, children, grandchildren and friends. She lived life to the fullest and had a great love for the outdoors and sports. She especially enjoyed tennis, golf, biking, horseback riding, swimming and traveling. Mary K. also enjoyed her Bridge Group and Book Club. She lived life with great joy, enthusiasm and passion.

The Armstrong family wishes to express their deep appreciation to their friends for their constant support and to physicians, Dr. Nicholas Gemma, Dr. George Van Osten, and Dr. Bruce Flax for their excellent treatment and compassion.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Armstrong-Dix Science, Math Scholarship, Shenandoah University, 1460 University Blvd, Winchester, Virginia or First Presbyterian Church, 116 South Loudoun Street, Winchester, Virginia.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Saturday, at First Presbyterian Church with Reverend Dr. Richard Reifsnyder officiating. A reception for family and friends will follow.

Arrangements are being handled by Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel Winchester, Virginia.

The news of Mary K's passing brought sadness to our family and we send our deepest sympathy to Dr. Jack and the entire family. It has been quite some time since we have been in contact with you and family members. My personal memories of Mary K brings to mind a wonderful, cheerful, loving and kind individual who was always bringing a positive energy to all. There was her beautiful smile that almost defined her identity. We shared some deep insightful conversations over the years when she would stop by the office at Stonebrook. The deep love that was shared with her family was evident in some of her great stories. There is little that words can do to give comfort at this time of loss. Mary Kay was one of the brightest and friendliest women I have known, here or anywhere. She was close friends with my co-worker, Joy Berghaus, who worked with me years ago at HandWorks Gallery. That is where I first got to know Mary Kay. Then, when I became nurse practitioner at the Free Clinic, I would see her glowing smile as she came to volunteer, or serve on our Board. My heart goes out to her husband, Jack, and her children adn grandchildren. We didn't get to keep her long enough....

Dear Susan, I was terribly shocked and saddened yesterday when I read of Mary K.'s passing, Barbara Graham Saunders joins me in sending you, Jack and all your family our very deepest sympathy and support at this time. We reminisced about our childhood, playing with you ("Poodie") and Mary K. at your home on Normandy Drive. And I fondly recall your parents and the rest of us out at the Chicken Coop (did I get the name right?). My father drove a golf ball through one of the windows in the little house, and that was a big deal! I remember a bonfire and your sister riding bareback -- probably no bridle either, of course.
