Margaret Ann (Shelton) Kozel Klein of Winchester, VA, 75, passed peacefully out of this life on Thursday, July 14, 2022. She bravely battled pancreatic cancer, enduring chemotherapy, radiation, surgery and more chemotherapy, all in her own sparkly, stylish flair.

Margaret was born in Columbus, GA, on August 30, 1946, to the late Gladys Elizabeth McMichael and Earnest Allen Shelton, Lt. Colonel (Ret.) US Army. She graduated from Baker High School in Columbus, class of 1964, and attended Columbus College and, later, Kennesaw State University. She married Frank Kozel III of Columbus, GA, (div. 1989), and later married Jerome “Jerry” Klein. Margaret was proud of her career as a secretary, and she retired as a paralegal from Solvay Pharmaceuticals in 2010. She enjoyed life and lived to brighten a room with her style, her smile and her laugh. She served the Republican Party of Georgia, traveled the world, loved any celebration with costumes and dancing, and thrived on overcoming challenges. She played the piano and learned Spanish; she sewed, painted, crafted, and crocheted. She was an avid reader, a Patriot, a faithful listener to the late Rush Limbaugh, and loved to create and style her own fashions. Her favorite saying was “I can do it.”

Margaret is survived by her daughters Elizabeth (Kozel) Gottfried of Raleigh, NC; Mary Margaret (Kozel) Headley (Mitch) of Newnan, GA; son Frank Kozel IV (Jennifer) of Marietta, GA; daughters Marie Alana (Kozel) Bosch (Greg) of St. Louis, MO; and Rosemary Ruth (Kozel) Powell (Jason) of Winchester, VA; grandchildren Brandon, Mary Layson, Cameron, Aaron and Dillon Gottfried; Madison, Mary Elizabeth and Mason Headley; Kayla and Chloe Kozel; Henry, Edward and Camilla Bosch; and Coleson, Brynley, Bryson and Landon Powell; brother Douglas Layson Shelton of Columbus, GA, and many cherished cousins and friends.

Margaret is preceded in death by her parents and husband Jerry.

My Dear Cousin, there are SO MANY pictures & things I would love to share but there aren't enough words or time to cover everything! I made my way into our family 20 years after you & we were two peas in a pod! It was dangerous to put us in the same room together! I wished we had taken that cruise we talked about but they would have left us stranded in the middle of the ocean after kicking us off the ship! To say love you & miss you terribly right now is an understatement! Random texts, calls, you showing up in my driveway. You didn't just go to a party, you WERE the party! You even walked down the aisle with me at my wedding. You loved your family & so proud of all of them! The morning you left us I know for certain that you organized a parade, wearing every piece of bling you ever owned and even Heaven didn't know what to do except join the party! More than anything, thank you! For your love, for your laughter & love of life, for just always being you! You have left a tremendous void by your absence but what memories we all will have & the blessing of having you in our lives! Angel & I are heartbroken but we take comfort knowing that we will see you again! Until then, give our love to all who have gone on before us! See ya later, alligator!

My heart hurts for your loss. What a dynamic personality the world will miss. Margaret was one of the most passionate women I have ever met. I could recount warm memories of milk and warm tollhouse pan cookies, fashion observation quips, sewing enlightenment, boys, raising children, politics, etcetera, but one thing stands out. As passionate and opinionated a mother, grandmother, wife and human being that Margaret was, I am so grateful to have had the privilege to hear speak her desire to pursue and to know Christ in her last weeks. We all have our own unique walk in this life. Her’s was exactly as it should be, running to the finish line. Margaret has left an amazing legacy in all of you. She could really make an impression on a person. My prayers of comfort and peace are with you daily. We will all miss her.

Margaret Ann, you are an inspiration to us all! Your ability to endure the unimaginable is unparalleled. You will be missed by all who knew you. Kathleen and I really enjoyed the trips we took, especially the train ride to New Orleans for the National Elks Convention. At times I thought we would be kicked off the train, yet other times we were the life of our car with other people joining us. Your dedication to Elk values, Elk traditions, and Elk charities, especially your support of the veterans, is remarkable. Margaret Ann, I am a better person for having know you!

Margaret was a wonderful woman. Her vibrant personality will be missed! God bless!

We were both at Baker High School in Columbus, Ga. So sorry about Margaret's passing but at least she is now out of pain and in a better place. My condolences to all of you.
