Our dear mother, Lucille Funk Hughes, went to her heavenly home on Saturday, May 25th, 2024.
She was born on July 27, 1931, in Frederick County, VA. Lucille was the daughter of the late Norman Leo Funk, Sr. and Marguerite Swartz Funk Brill. She attended Stephens City School. Lucille was a member of Relief United Methodist Church where she belonged to the United Methodist Women. Lucille was past president of U.M.W. She was a member of the chancellor choir for 60 years. Lucille volunteered at Winchester Hospital Gift Shop & American Red Cross. Her first job was at Gaunt Drug Store, from there she worked at Triangle Shoes, Sears Department Store from 1962-1979 and she retired from her career in retail at Naturalizer Shoes. Lucille also worked part-time for Belk Department Store in their shoe department.
Lucille married James Mac Hughes on July 23, 1950, in Woodstock, VA by Reverend Earl Day. Lucille and Jim were married for 64 years until Jim’s death on December 11, 2014.
She is survived by her children, Alecia Mildred Omps (John) and Douglas James Hughes (Karon); grandchildren, Dougie Hughes, (Angela), Stacey Martin, (Kevin), Herschel Omps and Aaron Omps (Misty); Great Grandchildren, Samantha Hobbs, (Chris), Carolyn Hughes (Steven), Amber Huff and Clark & Zane Groves; Great Great Grandchildren, Brooks, Sadie, Sylvia, Statler, Walker, Xavier and Davian. Lucille also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She is preceded in death by her parents, stepfather, Otis Wilbert Brill; husband, Jim; daughter, Cheryl Lynn Hughes; grandson, Corey Benjamin Omps; brothers, Walter M. Funk, Norman L. Funk, Jr. and stepbrother, Claude Brill.
For over 4 years, Lucille made her home at Hilltop Assisted Living. She met and made some wonderful friends. We would like to thank the staff for taking good care of mom while living there. She loved you all. We would also like to thank Hospice for the care she received these past two months.
A visitation will be held for Lucille on Friday, May 31, 2024, from 5pm to 7pm at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel. A service will be conducted on Saturday, June 1, 2024, at 11am at Relief United Methodist Church. A reception will follow at the church. Interment will be private in Mount Hebron Cemetery.
The pallbearers will be Douglas J. Hughes, Dougie Hughes, Herschel Omps, Aaron Omps, Kevin Martin, and Charles Boyd.
Honorary pallbearers will be John Snapp, Donald Snapp, Jimmy Boyd, Earl Luttrell, Rhodes Marston, and Allen Boyd.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Lucille to Relief United Methodist Church, 5275 Middle Road, Winchester, VA 22602.
