Bruce Benzie left a message on September 25, 2020:
My condolences to Linda, Courtenay and Allison on Barry's passing. I had the privilege of knowing, working with and enjoying having Barry in my company for 48 years. These years included twenty years at Martinsburg where Barry and I were navigators. In January this year I mentioned to Barry that I would take him along with any of his cars to numerous car shows in the Winchester area to insure Barry still enjoyed his hobby of Pontiac cars. With the onset of Coronovirus19 setting upon us, this idea came to a screeching halt. There were no car shows. I have many memories of Barry and will have one of the buildings he made for the Hagerstown Roundhouse Museum train layout renamed in his honor. The Speed Shop will be known as Barry's Speed Shop. Barry is on the Prayer List of the Rockland Community Church. God Bless.

Passing of Lieutenant Colonel Barry Smith. He was a great friend and supporter of Hagerstown Roundhouse Museum. I greatly appreciated his contribution to our Christmas layout when he made our drive-in theater display on the layout. it has been a great asset to the layout and has gained many compliments since it was installed. We will greatly miss him and his many contributions to our museum and the camaraderie we shared with him on his visits and the time he spent with us operating trains and in fellowship my condolences to the family at this time of great loss. It was great working with Barry and learning from him when I joined Airport Operations in 2001 until his retirement in 2008. He was a very pragmatic and logical decision maker. As an Operations Officer he was always calm and decisive responding to emergencies. His foundational work on what became the annual Dulles Day lives on. My condolences to his family in this difficult time. (The photo shows the Airport Operations team in 2001)

To Linda and the girls, Barry was my best friend. We enjoyed the car hobby together for the past 14 years. We traveled all over to watch racing, purchase cars, go to car shows and just enjoy a short road trip. We built two cars together. We treated each other as brothers. We were often asked if we were bothers when traveling. We knew each others families, we shared many things in common. I will miss him deeply. Barry was truly the kindest man I ever met. He would do anything to help me or anyone he knew. He once said, “I was the older brother he never had.”
