Louis Levathes
Mr. Louis Levathes, 99, of Frederick County, VA died Friday, April 8, 2016 in Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Levathes was born in 1917 in Mt. Carmel, PA, the son of the late George P. and Helen T. Levathes. He was a graduate of Central High School, Washington, D.C. in 1935; attended George Washington University where he studied paralegal; and earned his Bachelors of Law Degree at Catholic University Law School in Washington, D.C. His life time achievements were many as an attorney in private practice; a law enforcement specialist with the LEAA Dept. of Justice and project director for the American Correctional Association in Washington, D.C.; he was the director of the Juvenile Court of the District of Columbia from 1958 to 1969; as well as an attorney-advisor for the U.S. Department of the Air Force. Mr. Levathes was a veteran of the United States Navy serving from March 1942-October 1945, assigned to the Office of Strategic Services during WWII in the Middle East and Greece. He also served in the Active Air Force Reserve from 1951-1977, achieving the rank of Colonel. Mr. Levathes was a member of the Advisory Board for the Montgomery County, MD Boys Home, Inc., the D.C. Bar Association, and the Reserve Officers Association. He was a member of Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Washington, D.C.
His wife, Effie Pringos, whom he married on September 4, 1943 in Washington, D.C., preceded him in death on February 17, 2015.
Surviving is a daughter, Georgia L. Cullum, Harpers Ferry, WV; grandchildren, Theodora Cullum (Lane Harner), Harpers Ferry, WV, John Cullum (Ashley Adams), Harpers Ferry, WV, Jamie Sherin (Rachel Sherin), Fayetteville, AR; great grandchildren, Austin Sherin, Ethan Harner, Ezra Harner, Sydnee Sherin, and Gus Cullum.
Mr. Levathes was preceded in death by daughter, Maria Anne L. Sherin, son-in-law, Richard W. Sherin, son-in-law, John W. Cullum, and four siblings.
The family will receive friends on Monday, April 11, 2016 from 6-8 p.m. at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Washington, D.C., 2815 36th St. NW, Washington, D.C. with Father Steven P. Zorzos officiating. Interment will be private.
