Linda L. Engle, 83, of Charles Town, WV, passed away peacefully on August 22, 2025, under the compassionate care of Hospice of the Panhandle. Born in McDowell County, West Virginia on July 28, 1942, Linda lived a full and joyful life centered on love, hard work, and helping others.
Linda bravely endured years of heart-related health challenges but never let those struggles dim her vibrant spirit. Over the years, she pursued several meaningful careers—working in floral design, as a cafeteria worker in Maryland public schools, and as a safety escort driver for North American Homes. Her CB handle, affectionately known as “Carrot Top,” became a symbol of her fearless and fun-loving nature. Though the job was often challenging and risky, she embraced it wholeheartedly.
In her floral career, Linda found particular joy in creating arrangements for weddings, where her creativity and care made every bride feel special. Her warmth extended into her work in the schools as well, where students lovingly knew her as “Mrs. Linda,” always ready with a smile and a hug.
A passionate advocate for children and the elderly, Linda dedicated countless hours to fundraising, planning events, and raising awareness. She and her beloved husband John were active members of the Frederick Moose Chapter for many years, where their shared sense of service and community shined.
Linda is survived by her devoted husband of 44 years, John I. Engle Jr., of Charles Town, WV; her daughter T. Collette Hawes and husband Robert Hawes; grandchildren Danielle Shomaker and R. Justin Hawes and his wife Amy; and great-grandchildren Kayden Shomaker, Landen Hawes, and Nolan Hawes. She is also survived by her brother Willie M. Parrish and his wife Avis; nephew Mickey Parrish; great-niece Amy Eychner and her husband Darryl; and sister-in-law Mary Brooke and husband Ron Brooke.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter Thurman and Topsie Catherine Parrish; and her grandparents, Ethel May and Charlie Crigger, Coy James Neaves, and Millie Bowman, stepson John Edward Engle
A visitation will be held for Linda on Thursday, September 4, 2025, from 6pm to 8pm with a service to be conducted the following day, Friday, September 5, 2025, at 11am all held at Omps Funeral Home, South Chapel. Entombment will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park Mausoleum.
The family extends their deepest gratitude to the team at Hospice of the Panhandle for their extraordinary care and kindness during Linda’s final days.
