Gay Anderson Henkel passed away on December 13, 2018 at Shenandoah Valley Westminster Canterbury in Winchester, Virginia. Gay was the daughter of Dr. W. Clayton Anderson and Genevieve Gay Anderson.
Gay way born and raised in Winchester and graduated from John Handley High School in 1971. She received a BS degree from Catawba College in Salisbury North Carolina in 1975. She was an athlete, dancer and lover of the outdoors. Gay danced and taught ballet at the Anderson School of Dance. She was a highly competitive 4.0 tennis player on the Stonebrook Women’s Tennis Team for years and an accomplished golfer with the Tigers of the Winchester Country Club. Her favorite pastimes were cooking, swimming, fishing and bird watching at her much loved “Cabin” at Lake St. Clair. She was a loving mother, sister, grandmother, and dear friend to many.
Gay was previously a realtor with Daniel Grimes Realty and for the last 14 years was the co-builder and co-owner of the Millstone BBQ in Burlington, West Virginia.
Ms. Henkel was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Winchester.
Gay is survived by her three sons, William (Mac) Henkel, Jr., Mark B. Henkel and John (J.C.) Henkel and wife, Elizabeth; her four grandchildren, Jada, Rylee, Jett and Beau Henkel; her two brothers, John C. Anderson (Ellen), Douglass G. Anderson (Susan) and one sister, Mary Carolynn A. McLoughlin (Dennis). Gay will be missed by her long-time companion and friend Jim Thrush. Preceding her in death were her parents, brother, William (Bill) Anderson and mother-in-law, Mrs. Mary Henkel.
Gay expressly requested there be no “funeral service” for her. There will be a “party” of sorts for those who knew and will miss her at Omps Reception Center, Amherst Chapel on Amherst Street from 6:00 PM-8:00 PM on Wednesday, December 19, 2018. Interment will be private in Mount Hebron Cemetery.
It is her wish that in lieu of flowers a contribution be made in her name to Fremont Street Nursery, Inc., 533 Fremont Street, Winchester, Virginia 22601.
