Kenneth Edward Smallridge, 91, of Winchester, VA died Monday, March 3, 2014.
He was born at French Creek, West Virginia, the son of Otis and Della Smallridge. After graduation from Buckhannon High School, he attended West Virginia University until he was called to serve in the Navy during WWII. After the war, he graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan University. When he retired from the Frederick County School System, he was a building contractor in the area. Kenneth was a scholar of the Native American culture. He and his wife traveled the American west and were champions of the first Americans.
Surviving is his wife of 67 years Vivian Hart Smallridge and daughters, Brenda Koonce (husband, Swagler Koonce II) of Winchester and Sharon Stickley (husband, Dr. Robert Stickley) of Christiansburg, Virginia. He had seven grandchildren: Shelly Day, Kara Koonce (husband, Travis Hicks), Swagler Koonce III, and LeeAnn Porter (husband, Andrew Porter), Anna Harrison (husband, Matthew Harrison), Robert Stickley and Samuel Stickley; five great grandchildren: Emma Harrison, Zane and Zoey Day, and Vivian and Nathan Porter. Additionally, Kenneth had many nephews, nieces, and former students that respected and admired him.
A soft spoken man, he worked diligently his whole life and encouraged his family to do likewise and to follow their dreams.
The family thanks the caretakers at Evergreen Rehabilitation Center and the many kind neighbors.
