Karen (Smith) Massie

            Karen (Smith) Massie, age 63, of Winchester, Virginia, passed away on Saturday, February 21, 2015, at her residence.  She went to be with her beloved mother Winona Naomi Smith whom passed away a day earlier.

            Mrs. Massie was born in 1951, in Winchester, VA, the daughter of the late Alvin Richard and Winona Naomi (Grim) Smith, Sr.  She attended James Wood High School.  She had her own in home childcare business and was a seamstress.  Karen was a member of Mt. Olive United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Mt. Olive Women’s Group “The Olive Oyls” and participated on numerous church boards.  She loved to sew, crochet, and creating all sorts of crafts.  She dearly loved every child in her care throughout the years.   Family outings included camping, going to the beach and searching for sea shells.  Her grandchildren looked forward to their annual cookie day at Grandmas.  She loved her family and friends always putting their needs ahead of her own.  She never met a stranger. 

            Karen married Thomas “Tom” P. Massie on August 26, 1983 in Winchester.

            In addition to her husband, Karen is survived by her daughters, Beth Shobe (Tony), Paige Williams (Karl), Jessie Smith (Jason), Bessie Massie and Crystal Claycomb; her sons, Jason Massie (Laura) and Joshua Massie (Megan); grandchildren, Courtney Foreman (Chad), Zack Shobe, Ethan Daniels, Kailyn  White, Emma Massie, Chase Powell, Aubrie Williams, and Wyatt Smith; her sister, Brenda K. Smith and brothers, Alvin R. “Rick” Smith, Jr., Randall B. Smith (Monica), and Ronald L. “Buck” Smith.    One grandson, Luke Williams, preceded her in death.

            The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 5:00 until 8:00 PM at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.

            A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Friday, February 27, 2015, at Omps Amherst Chapel with Pastor Victor Gomez officiating.  Interment will be private.

            In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in memory of Karen may be made to Mt. Olive United Methodist Church, 327 Mt. Olive Road, Winchester, VA  22603 or the Frederick County Esther Boyd Animal Shelter 161 Fort Collier Rd. Winchester, VA 22603

Years ago, when I was growing up, my family would drive from Louisiana to Virginia every summer to visit my cousins. To Tommy and family , OMG, what can say? I can not begin to tell you how sorry I am to hear of Karen's passing. I like to consider Karen one of my best friends. She was always there for me when I needed her in the early years. She took care of my kids day and night when I had to work. She got them to do things I never could. She cut and permed my hair when I didn't have money for a salon. The both of you helped me move more times than I care to count. Then when I got remarried, if it wasn't for Karen I would have lost my mind that day. She jumped right in and did the girls hair and made sure the reception ran smoothly. Over the last few years we kinda didn't stay in touch as much as I would have liked to. We would run into each other at Wal Mart and it was just like old times. We would always say we need to get together sometime but we never did. That's going to be my biggest regret. We watched each others kids grow up, go off and get married, and have kids of their own. I love you Karen and you will be greatly missed. You were a wonderful wife and the best mom and grandma. To the family, my prayers go out to you. All my love, Linda
