Joyce Rebecca Saville Braithwaite, 72, of Frederick County, Virginia passed away Wednesday, December 12, 2018, at Winchester Medical Center.

Joyce was born in 1946 in Keyser, West Virginia, the daughter of Mary Saville Webber and the late Wendall Saville. She graduated from John Handley High School, Class of 1964. This is where her future husband, Terry, first saw her…..cheerleading at a Handley football game. Joyce was a surgical nurse/office manager at Winchester Surgical Consultants for many years and was General Registrar for the City of Winchester, from where she retired. She was a lifelong member of the SPCA, was always helping others, and volunteered for charitable organizations. Joyce had a zest for life and enjoyed traveling/mischief with her lifelong friend Marilyn. She loved cooking for and hosting family and friends, crafts, sewing, making gift baskets and her many four-legged children. She was a member of First Baptist Church and attended Burnt Factory United Methodist Church.

Joyce married Terry C. Braithwaite on August 30, 1975 in Winchester, Virginia.

Surviving with her mother and husband of 43 years are sons, Eric Braithwaite (Jessie) of Winchester, Virginia and Adam Braithwaite of Richmond, Virginia; daughter, Lisa Hyde of Winchester, Virginia; grandchildren, Locke Braithwaite and Katherine Hyde; brother, Robert Saville of Winchester, Virginia; sisters, Bonnie Weatherholtz of Pensacola, Florida, Betty Funkhouser of Baker, West Virginia, Linda Frame of Petersburg, West Virginia; and her special son, Jackson Levi.

Along with her father, Joyce was preceded in death by a brother, Boyd Saville.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the cards, phone calls, visits, and support from Joyce’s loving friends over the past several years.

The family will receive friends from 6 pm to 8 pm on Sunday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 am on Monday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel with Reverend Steve Melester officiating. A reception will follow the service at Omps Reception Center, Amherst Chapel. Interment will be private.

Tab and I have not known the Braithwaite family as long as many in Winchester. But, as soon as Terry and Joyce moved across the street several years ago, they have been like family (even attending our family get togethers). Joyce would call me after one of her luncheons and feed us her delicious leftovers. When I asked her for the recipe of her famous pizza dip, she gave me the ingredients, knowing I was preparing it when we found out my father had cancer. Joyce made us laugh, invited us to her home for many special events, and we always felt loved and welcomed. Our prayers go out to the family, and especially to our dear friend, Terry. The service today was a true reflection of how much Joyce was loved. We join the list of people whose lives are better for knowing Joyce Braithwaite.

My sincerest condolences. I will forever have wonderful memories of our friendship. We had some great adventures and so many laughs over those years. May all our sweet memories bring comfort and healing.

Terry, Adam, & Eric - our thoughts and prayers go out to all of you. We have so many wonderful memories of being together when the boys were playing baseball. Many weekends spent in ballparks but we had fun & Joyce played a huge part in those memories. Praying that God will walk with you through these days but the many memories will see you through.

My since condolences to Joyce's family, friends and colleagues. May your Faith comfort and strengthen you during this sorrowful time. I had the pleasure of working with Joyce during my tenure at the State Board of Elections. She was a loving, caring and generous individual who treated others like family. She will be missed but not forgotten. Prayers lifted for all who grieve her loss.

Joyce was my office manager for about 8 years at Surgical Consultants. I enjoyed my time there very much in a large part due to Joyce. She was a wonderful leader and an equally wonderful person who loved her family very much. Her memory will always be with me. The family is in my prayers.

Part of her name is "Joy", and she was a joy to work with. In the predominately male OR, she held her own and, as a true multi-tasker, she could demonstrate her personality while never missing a beat with instruments. Oh, the tales she could tell! To know that she was a cheerleader makes sense. I last saw her at an OR Oldtimers reunion when ALS was a part of the picture; it was definitely still Joyce, and it was so good to see her. I regret that I will not be able to attend the funeral or wake due to recent surgery. Farewell and God bless, my friend; the rest of us will be along in a little while

I met Joyce through my sister, Linda. She was the kindest, most loving person I ever had the honor of knowing. She loved life to the fullest. I will truely miss her. I know that she and my mom are dancing in Heaven.

Terry, thinking of you in this time of sorrow

At first Joyce was a great neighbor and then became a very special friend to me. We had so much fun shopping, cooking, going on golf cart rides, and playing with our boxers. Joyce will never be forgotten. I miss you so much already!

Joyce was always a spark! In a football game she came over to the bench, whether we were winning or losing, after a good play by the other team. She would look at us then she would saying something like,"How long you all going to put up with that?" Then she'd go cheer some more. I will miss her. Blessings to the family and Terry. She was so special, so strong, so dedicated and so loving. Thank you Father for her and you all have a good time because she really deserves it.

Joyce was a blessing to all who knew her. I'm thankful that we got to visit at our 50th class reunion 4+ years ago. Joyce cared about each person she knew, and her bravery fighting ALS let each of us know that she was a true warrior with a hero's heart!

Joyce and I were friends since our Brownie scout days and continued to be throughout our lives. In recent years we grew closer, and I felt as if we were sisters. Her loving family welcomed me into their home and hearts. Words cannot tell how much I will miss her. She was the best of the best.

Joyce was so full of life and goodness! So long dear lady, now you are free.
