Joanne Carol Takach, 88 of Winchester, VA, passed away on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, at Winchester Medical Center.

Joanne was born in 1937 in Philadelphia, PA, the daughter of the late Joseph and Elsie Takach. She was a high school graduate who went on to earn her associate’s degree from Bucks County Community College and also received her LPN nursing degree. Joanne retired from the Clarke County School System as a teacher’s aide. She enjoyed crocheting and doing water aerobics at the pool in Jim Barnett Park. Joanne lived a very active lifestyle walking several miles every day. Most of all she loved spending time with and watching her grandchildren excel in their individual sports.

She is survived by her son, Gregory Wilson; daughters, Lizanne Wilson-Avial, Jennifer Springs (Tony), Stephanie Longshore and her grandchildren, Alx, Gregory, Casey, Tyler, Gavin, Noah, Gabel, Hayden and Clark.

In addition to her parents, Joanne is preceded in death by her sister, Elyse Creamer.

A Mass will be held at a later date at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church.

Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Joanne to Jim Barnett water aerobics program, donations may be mailed in care of the Jim Barnett Water Aerobics Program to City of Winchester, Rouss City Hall, 15 N. Cameron St., Winchester, VA 22601

You were the strongest, bravest, most resilient, and self reliant woman I have ever met. You were an excellent mother, father, provider, friend and example to me. I am so thankful for your presence in my life and I am devastated without you. I love you forever mom!

Joanne will surely be missed in our water aerobic classes. She was the first person to make me feel welcome. She had a wonderful sense of humor. I told her she was my idol. It was hard for me to keep up with her in the beginning. We had many laughs while talking baseball and memories. We had so much in common. I’ll miss her very much. God Bless Joanne’s family. Joanne was in the Winchester Star (last summer, I believe) when the photographer saw our outdoor class. If memory serves, she refused to tell her age:)

Joanne was so faithful in coming to water aerobics, and I often saw her walking in the park. She was our barometer for how cold the water felt each day. Joanne was quick to check on anyone who looked like they weren't feeling well, always happy to talk baseball and about her family, and told us to move if we jokingly tried to take her spot in class! She is and will be very much be missed.

My deepest condolences to the family and loved ones. Remember JoAnn from J-W Middle School, when she was hired. Later learned from her that her husband was my driving teacher from RHS in East Falls. We laughed about how ‘small the world’ really was for us. RIP, my friend

Joanne will really be missed in our water aerobics class at the park. She was a big part of what was fun for me. Although we all teased her about her difficulty getting into the water when it was cool, she always had a good come back. Her smile and ready humor was a big part of our class. I hope her family knows that she touched many lives.

Will miss your presence. You were next to me always at water aerobics. You were so brave when it was soooooo cold. Such a smiling and happy person. I am sure you have your angel wings!
