John T. Toler left a message on December 5, 2014:
Capt. Ellington was my commanding officer when he led our Virginia Army National Guard unit in Warrenton back in the early 1970s. I was Jimmies RTO and jeep driver, and got to know him well while he led our unit. Jimmie was a good CO, and was respected by his men. His job was not easy, and at times was like "herding cats," but he was always fair, and looked out for us. And yes, he had a good sense of humor! I spoke with Jimmie on the phone the day before he died, and we talked about old times in the VaNG, He had found a photo of our company marching in the July 4, 1971 parade in Blackstone, Va., while we were training at Ft. Pickett. Jimmie sent me that picture, which I received the day I learned of his passing. He was a good man and a good officer, and I wish we had rekindled our friendship long ago.

Our Dear Anne and Family, Our deepest sympathy to each of you as your loved one has slipped away to finally be with his Lord. Though he hated to leave as much as you hated to see him go, it's comforting to know he is at peace and longing to have you join him for eternal rest with the heavenly Father. We too are feeling an empty spot in our lives just knowing he is no longer in our midst, but look forward to sitting with him in the swing of heaven going over the latest from the Pearly Gate Express news. With all our love, Stan and Jean
