Jean Hull Stevenson Yancey, 90, of Winchester, VA passed away peacefully Thursday, February 12, 2015 in Rose Hill Assisted Living.
Mrs. Yancey was born in 1924 in White Pigeon, Michigan, the daughter of the late Edward C. and Marion L. Stevenson. She graduated from White Pigeon High School in 1942, during which time she was a Baton Twirler and Drum Major for the White Pigeon High School Band. Mrs. Yancey proudly accrued many outstanding accomplishments never before attained by a high school girl at that time including, but not limited to, the first ever National contest winner for her High School. Between 1941 and 1943 Mrs. Yancey won 1st place in an additional thirteen contests, the most memorable being her 1943 win as the World Champion Girl Twirler. She retired holding Junior and Senior State Championships, District and National High School Championships, and many other contests.
Mrs. Yancey met her future husband, Jack Lee Yancey of Sturgis, MI while working at the Kirsch Company. They married in 1947. She was a dedicated homemaker and mother as well as a baton teacher and an avid bridge player. Later she worked as an Accounts Payable specialist for the Pat Griffin Petroleum (Gas-O-Mat) Corporation in Ft. Collins, Colorado for a number of years.
Surviving are daughters, Sara Huffman, Winchester, VA and Lizabeth Greenwalt (Dean), St. Louis, MO; grandchildren, Ted Sikes (Brandi), High Point, NC, Andrew Sikes (Melissa), Mechanicsville, VA, Rachel Greenwalt, Suffolk, VA; great grandchildren, Emma, Riley, Katie, and Jack Sikes, High Point, NC; Olivia and Nora Sikes, Mechanicsville, VA; and Rebekkah, Samuel, and Nathaniel Greenwalt, Suffolk, VA.
Mrs. Yancey was preceded in death by husband, Jack L. Yancey; sister, June Louise Spencer; grandson, John Douglas Greenwalt; and son-in-law, John H. Huffman.
All services will be private; arrangements are being handled by Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.
