James “Jim” Quenton Huey, Jr., 83, of Stephens City, Virginia passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 13, 2017, at his home, surrounded by his family and friends. Mr. Huey was born in 1934 in Washington, D.C., the son of the late Marie and James Huey, Sr. He graduated from San Bernardino High School in California. Mr. Huey attended and graduated from Davis and Elkins College in Elkins, West Virginia earning a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Biology. He was a Chemical Engineer for Corning Glass, retiring in 1989. Mr. Huey was a veteran of the United States Army achieving the rank of Lt. Colonel and retired from the National Guard. He taught Chemistry and coached football at John Handley High School in his former years; was past president of The Stephens City Lions Club; was a member of the Frederick County School Board; was a talented musician and played trumpet with the Les Brown Band in California and performed with The Gay Notes Band in Winchester. He was a skilled wood worker, craftsman, and artist; building a lot of the furniture in the family home and spent a lot of time restoring furniture and the federal style home they owned. Mr. Huey enjoyed football and was an avid Redskins, Virginia Tech, and West Virginia Mountaineer fan. He liked watching western movies, especially John Wayne movies and was of the Methodist faith. His greatest passion was his family…he loved and adored all of them…his grandchildren, great grandchild, and his cats and dogs. At one point he was a tee-ball coach for his grandchildren’s Frederick County teams as well as other teams in the county. All of the children that he coached had a special place in his heart. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather that is loved and will be missed very much.
Mr. Huey married JoEllen Harris on October 23, 1957 in Arlington, Virginia.
Surviving with his beloved wife of 59 years are daughters, Debi Ramey (Bill) of Stephens City, Virginia, Cyndie Layman (Roger) of Stephens City, Virginia, and Mitz Ryder (Mike) of Marlinton, West Virginia; grandchildren, Helen Reinhardt (Chris) of Winchester, Virginia, Zach Layman (Chelsea) of Lakewood, Colorado, Megan Miller (Kelly) of Strasburg, Virginia, Josh Layman of Stephens City, Virginia, Katelyn Ferguson (Jonathan) of Camp Pendleton, California, Kayla Ramey (Curtis Daily) of Winchester, Virginia; and great grandchild, Kegan Miller of Strasburg, Virginia.
The family will receive friends from 10 am to 11 am on Saturday at Omps Funeral Home, South Chapel with a memorial service following at 11 am with Dr. Mike Morrison officiating.
