James J. Starosta, 100, of Winchester, VA, passed away on Thursday, August 22, 2024, at Shenandoah Valley Westminster Canterbury.
Jim was born in 1923 in Philadelphia, PA, the son of the late Samuel and Catherine Starosta. He was a graduate of West Catholic High School in Philadelphia. Jim was a veteran of the United States Navy as a 3rd Class Machinist Mate during WWII where he served on the USS Wyndham Bay Aircraft Carrier. He was also part of the Reunion Committee to reunite the servicemen who were on that carrier. He retired as a Machinist Foreman for Gulf Oil Corporation in Philadelphia. For many years, he was a member of the Prometheus Ukrainian Male Chorus in Philadelphia. After his retirement, he enjoyed doing “Plexi-Point,” an art he developed which involved drilling small holes into plexiglass and then filling them with paint to create a beautiful design. Being of Ukrainian descent, Jim was previously a member of the Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church in Philadelphia for many years. He later became a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Winchester.
Jim married Mary Kredensor on September 25, 1949, in Philadelphia. She preceded him in death in April of 2005.
He is survived by his daughters, Suzanne L. Hoffmann (Gert) and Nancy M. Seroka (Ken); grandchildren, Cheryl S. March (Christopher), Gregory N. Seroka (Ilissa), Nadia Hoffmann and Kimberly Lenz (Christopher); great-grandchildren, Bryce, Celia, Leia and Sadie and many loving nieces, nephews and dear friends.
Along with his parents and wife, Jim is preceded in death by his great-grandson, Lucas March; sisters, Ann Cwiek and Sister Vincent O.S.B.M., and his brother, John Starosta.
A visitation will be held for Jim at 10 am on Friday, August 30, 2024 with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church. Interment will be in Fairfax Memorial Park on Thursday, September 5, 2024 at 12pm.
