Born March 9, 1935, in Winchester, to the late Charles and Georgianna Fletcher Alger.

         He owned and operated Alger’s Construction until retiring.  Previously he co-owned Alger Bros. Gulf Station & Produce in Winchester with his brother, Charles.

         Jim was a hard worker since childhood.  One of 13 children he did his best to help his family, taking his younger sibling under his guidance.  He enjoyed fishing, gardening and bingo and could fix just about anything.  Always ready to tell you a little joke.

         Known as the “Skillet man” he was a regular fixture at Shen-Val Flea Market for over 30 years.

         He married his devoted wife/caregiver, Irene Stelzl Alger, on September 9, 1954, at the First Baptist Church in Winchester, VA.

         Surviving with his wife are daughters, Rose Chrisman of Bloomery and Angela Pitta of Winchester.  Sister, Patricia Prokopovich of Madison Heights, VA.  Brother, Joe Alger and Phillip Alger both of Winchester and David Alger of Madison Heights, VA.  Grandsons, Chad Chrisman and Kyle Chrisman.  Granddaughter, Brittany Pitta.  Three great grandchildren, Bryson, Natalie and Emma Chrisman and a 4^th, Connor James Chrisman, is due on May 18^th.

         He was preceded in death by brothers, Teddy, Charles and Walter Alger; sisters, Doris Baker, Emily Hawthorne, Betty Davis, Margaret West and Anna Lou Seal.

         The family would like to thank Blue Ridge Hospice staff and nurses for all their special care and help during his illness.

         Per Mr. Alger’s request, all services will be private.
