James E. Montgomery
James Evans “Monty” Montgomery, 94, of Cross Junction, Virginia, died Sunday, September 14, 2014, at his home.
Mr. Montgomery was born in Saline, Louisiana, the son of the late William Samuel and Nena Bertha Montgomery. He was a graduate of Saline High school and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Louisiana Polytechnic Institute, which is now Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, LA.
In 1942, he began his engineering career with the Department of the Navy in Washington, DC, and then was a Design Engineer with Dixie Machine Welding and Metal Works in New Orleans, LA. After his World War II military service as a Staff Sergeant with the Corps of Engineers at the Research and Development Laboratories in Ft. Belvoir, VA, he remained at this location as a Civilian Research and Development Engineer. He retired in 1975 as Chief of the Advanced Development Group, U.S. Army Mobility Equipment Research and Development Center. He was a Registered Professional Engineer.
After retirement, Mr. Montgomery was a cattle and hay farmer at Reynolds Store, VA. He and his wife became members of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Cross Junction.
He married Bernice Watt on May 15, 1948, in Alexandria, Virginia.
Surviving with his wife is daughter, Lynn Montgomery Nocera and husband, Tony, of Manassas; daughter-in-law, Virginia ”Gigi” Montgomery of Arlington, Virginia; six grandchildren, Rose Montgomery, Adela Montgomery, William Montgomery, Mary Ann Montgomery, Amanda Nocera and T.J. Nocera.
His son, J. Mark Montgomery, one sister, Margaret E. Burns and three brothers, William Claude Montgomery, Osborne Keen Montgomery and Billy Joe Montgomery, preceded him in death.
The family will receive friends prior to the service, from 10:00-11:00 AM, on Saturday, at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Saturday at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, with Reverend James Markle and Reverend Philip Brumback officiating. Interment will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park, Frederick County, Virginia.
