On October 9, 2018 at 1AM, Ilse Louise Stanton of Stephens City passed away in Winchester, Virginia while at Spring Arbor Assisted Living facility.
Ilse Louise (Hoffmann) Stanton was born in Christ Hospital of Jersey City (New Jersey) on February 25, 1935 to Karl August and Louise Emilie Hoffmann both from Germany. She grew up in Weehawken, New Jersey and graduated from Robert Fulton High School in June 1952. She graduated June 11, 1956 from Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in Spanish and minoring in German and Spanish. On June 25, 1959 she was certified to teach in New Jersey and began teaching at Chatham High School. She went on to night school at Columbia University Teacher’s College and graduated with a Master of Fine Arts Degree in 1958. In October 1959, she married John R. Stanton from Newington, Connecticut. Mr. Stanton was a Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps and worked afterwards as an Aeronautical Engineer. They lived in Lawrence Township and Springfield, New Jersey, then Windsor and Norwalk, Connecticut. They settled in Weston, Connecticut where they had two sons, Jeffrey and Stuart and two German Shepherds. She taught Spanish, French and German at Wilton High School in Wilton, Connecticut becoming tenured on March 5, 1973 and retiring June 30, 1992, teaching in Wilton for 22 years. She became a widow as Mr. Stanton passed away on April 17, 2013, and he is buried in Macedonia Church Cemetery, where she will be buried. In October 2017 she moved into assisted living at Spring Arbor and in the final days was under the care of Blue Ridge Hospice. Ilse was beloved by all, and will be sorely missed by the community.
Ilse is survived by two sons Jeffrey and Stuart and two grandchildren Brittany and Matthew. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on October 20, 2018 at Omps Funeral Home South Chapel, 1260 Front Royal Pike (Rt. 522 South) in Winchester with Pastor Mike Mayton from Macedonia Church officiating. Interment will follow the services at the Macedonia Cemetery.
The family invites all of Ilse’s friends to celebrate her life, and requests that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made in her name to the ASPCA www.ASCPCA.org or the local Frederick County SPCA www.winchesterspca.org or St. Jude Children’s Hospital www.stjude.org. Her personal belongings were donated to the Blue Ridge Hospice.
