Harry Thomas Newman

November 17, 1943 – May 17, 2026

Harry Thomas Newman, age 82, passed away Sunday, May 17, 2026.  He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

Harry was born November 17, 1943 in Danville, Virginia to the late Sidney Onyx Newman, Sr. and Marjorie Doyle Newman.  He has an identical twin brother, Sidney, and a sister, Marjorie.  He enlisted in the United States Army in 1966, was selected for and completed Infantry Officer Candidate School, and commissioned as an officer in the US Army in 1967. Harry served two tours in Vietnam with the Army Security Agency (ASA) and many of those he worked with became lifelong friends. After serving 21 years Harry retired in 1986 holding the rank of Lieutenant Colonel before embarking on a second career in the private sector.  Harry was instrumental in founding the ASA Veterans Association, whose focus is the establishment of a memorial in Arlington Cemetery for fallen ASA comrades. While in the Army, Harry married the love of his life, Celestial Ruth Newman, on March 22, 1970 and welcomed their first of two sons in September 1971.  Ruth and their sons Tom and Kyle were the focus of Harry’s life.

Passion for cars lead Harry to be involved in many community car groups, organizing and participating in many car events in the area.  His favorite was his Subaru SVX, but over the years owned everything from British sportscars, muscle cars and Porsche. His enjoyment extended beyond collecting.  For many years, Harry was a driving instructor, teaching novice drivers the art of piloting their vehicles around road course circuits such as Summit Point Motorsports Park and Virginia International Raceway. His sons shared his interest and often participated at events together with him.

Harry was a great supporter of the greater Winchester area community.  He supported Habitat for Humanity, receiving the Linda B. Calley award for his volunteer work.  His further support included volunteering at the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, Ruritans and other local charities.  He was loved and respected in his community.  Harry was also very involved in activities and operation of Macedonia United Methodist Church.

Harry is survived his wife of 57 years, Ruth, sons Tom Newman (wife Sherry) and Kyle Newman, grandchildren Sarah, Casimer, and Calel, his identical twin, Sidney O. Newman, Jr., and many nieces and nephews.

A visitation for Harry will be held July 24, 2026, from 6-8 PM at the Macedonia United Methodist Church, 1941 Macedonia Church Rd, White Post, VA 22663.  His funeral service will be held on July 25 at 11 AM, also at the Macedonia United Methodist Church. Military Honors will be presented outside the church immediately after the funeral service.  In lieu of flowers, Harry requested donations be sent to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank.
