Harry “Chief” Carter, Jr.
Happy Harry was called home to be with his Father on February 14, 2014 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer!
Harry was born in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of Juanita Garrett and the late Harry E. Carter, Sr.
He is survived by his loving wife, Dottie; a step-son, Michael Whitlock, and wife, Amy; a step-daughter, Judy Graham, and husband Chris; and his step grandchildren, little buddy, Jared, David and Tara Downs. He is also survived by his mother, Juanita; sister, Sherrie Butcher, and husband Tim; and his brother, Garrett Carter. Also surviving are his nieces, Megan Butcher, and companion, Meredith; Amanda Jackson, and husband, Bryant; nephews Kyle Carter and Isaac Carter; as well as two grand nieces, Rilyn and Mackenzie Jackson.
Mr. Carter was preceded in death by his father, Harry, Sr., and a sister Melody Jo.
Harry went to John Handley High School and graduated from the University of Sioux Falls with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. Throughout the years, Harry was a valuable asset to many companies and had spent the last 6 years of his life as a Formulator for Thermo Fisher Scientific! He was known as “Happy Harry” by his family, his friends and all he worked with over the years. Harry always had a smile on his face, greeted you with a “Happy Monday” (or whatever day it was), and relied heavily on his faith to get him through each and every event in his life, including this last battle with cancer. He is an inspiration to many people and we can only imagine how happy he was when Jesus opened His heart and His arms and invited him into “Happy Heaven!” May the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you Happy Harry!
A Celebration Reception of Harry’s life will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Harry’s family encourages you to come eat, socialize and remember. At 3:00 pm Harry’s brother Garrett will begin with a time of sharing stories and memories where all are encouraged to participate.
In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions in honor of Harry can be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 west Cork Street, Winchester, Virginia 22601.
