Harold Douglas Patton, 93, of Frederick County, Virginia, died Thursday, June 4, 2015, at Westminster Canterbury.
Mr. Patton was born in 1921, in Winchester, Virginia, the son of the late George W. and Ethel Patton. He was a 1939 graduate of John Handley High School and was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Mr. Patton a veteran having served in the United States Army, during WWII, in the European Theatre, Headquarters 29th Division. He was the owner and operator of Patton’s Furniture Sales, established in 1957 and later Patton’s Moving and Storage for over 25 years. Mr. Patton was a member of Braddock Street United Methodist Church in Winchester, where he served as Chairman of the Official Board, Chairman of Trustees and Chairman of the Finance Committee. As a member of the Wesley Fellowship Class he served as President for a number of years.
Mr. Patton was a lifetime member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars where he served as Commander; Past President of the Winchester Chamber of Commerce, receiving the “Outstanding Young Man of the Year” Award. He was on the original board of the William and Henry Evans Home and also served on the original board of Trustees of Shenandoah College and Conservatory, serving as treasurer of the Building Fund for eight years.
Mr. Patton also served on the boards of the Commercial and Savings Bank, Valley of Virginia Bank and Dominion Bank, from which he retired.
He married Laura Jean Forney on March 31, 1946, in Winchester. She preceded him in death on April 15, 2014.
Surviving is his daughter, Marian P. Bradshaw and her husband, Steve, of Thomasville, Georgia; son, Bruce Eugene Patton and his wife, Bobbi, of Winchester, Virginia; four grandchildren, Kathryn L. Bradshaw of Jacksonville, Florida, Matthew C. Bradshaw and his wife, Alaina, of Thomasville, Georgia, Jennifer L. Collins and husband, James, of Charlottesville, Virginia and Kevin M. Patton and his wife, Kristen, of Winchester, Virginia; eight great grandchildren, Maya, Dylan, Brayden, Maxwell, Alyssa, Johnathan, Michelle, and Amelia.
Four sisters, Evelyn Patton, Hilda Morris, Madeline Hershberger, Gretna Carlisle and three brothers, Linwood Patton, Raymond Patton and Kenneth Patton, preceded him in death.
The family will receive friends on Sunday from 6:00-8:00 PM at Westminster Canterbury, upstairs in The Commons.
A funeral service will be conducted at 10:00 AM on Monday at Braddock Street United Methodist Church with Reverend Kirk Nave officiating. Interment will be at 3:00 PM in Mount Hebron Cemetery, Winchester, Virginia with military honors afforded by V.F.W. Post 2123.
Pallbearers will be Kenneth C. Patton, Jr., George Morris, Jeffery R. Patton, Brent Carlisle, Kevin M. Patton and Matthew C. Bradshaw.
