Gerald “Gerry” E. Shanahan, 68 of Winchester, passed away on Saturday, December 20, 2025, at Blue Ridge Care Inpatient Care Center. Though he went through a lot, when it came to his illness, Gerry “took it on the chin” and up until the end was blessed to maintain his mind and his dignity.
Gerry was born September 14, 1957, in Tacoma, WA, the son of Thomas Gerald Shanahan and the late Shirley Margaret Wheelden Shanahan. He was a graduate of Lakewood High School in St. Petersburg, FL and was employed as a Horticulturist working various jobs within that industry. Gerry loved spending time at his sister Margarets farm “Marbill Farm” in Pennsylvania where he would help with whatever needed handled. He was also very funny, made friends very easily, was a great storyteller and loved listening to his books on tape and would then always tell everyone about the stories he was listening to. Gerry loved his guns, video games, drinking a good beer and cheering on Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever Women’s Basketball Team. Above all else he loved being a dad and spending time with his family. He was extremely proud of all his children and grandchildren and loved them dearly.
Along with his mother Shirley he was also preceded in death by his beloved son David Joseph Shanahan.
In addition to his father Thomas, he is survived by his daughters Jamie Pedrick (the late Mike) and Jennifer Shanahan (fiancé Matt Jost); grandchildren Amelia Shanahan, Ethan Pedrick and Ava Pedrick; his brother Kevin J. Shanahan (Debbie); sisters Kathy Ellen Staples (Brian), Maureen T. Shanahan, Margaret A. Shanahan (the late Bill), Patricia F. Shanahan (fiancé Dustin) and Bridget E. Ferrara; many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great-nephews, cousins and dear friends and his beloved Border Collie Finnegan McCool The Legendary Irish Giant.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Gerry at a later date.
