Gary “Pop” Charles DeOms (72) is at peace in the loving arms of our amazing God. He was born on February 10, 1943 in Baltimore, Maryland, only son of Charles and Naoma DeOms. A joyful childhood was spent harassing his cousins (especially LaVern) and playing the accordion. He earned his PhD in Animal Nutrition from the University of Maryland, where he met the love of his life, Dianne. Together, they raised two children; Jodi and Bryan. They were later blessed with a son in law (Bob McKay) and daughter in law (Kendra Ramey DeOms) and six incredible grandchildren who were the light of Pop’s life (Ben, Tyler, Brady, Amanda, Quincy, and Wyatt). Gary went to work for Virginia Tech as an Agriculture Extension Agent, serving farmers in the Shenandoah Valley. His passion was supporting the agriculture industry and the farmers he loved. He served on the Board of Directors for the Frederick County Fruit Growers Association, was the Associate Director of the Lord Fairfax Soil and Water Conservation District, a member of the Lord Fairfax Orchid Society, and a very active member of the Kernstown United Methodist Church Family. He retired from the Extension Service in 2002, after 30 years of service. He proudly owned and operated De Little O’ Greenhouse, where he raised orchids and unusual houseplants and was a valuable volunteer for Special Love, Inc, sponsoring organization of Camp Fantastic and BRASS Camp. Gary was never seen without a smile, his hat, or his suspenders. A Visitation Party celebrating his life will be held at Marker Miller Farm Market on Tuesday (3/31) from 5-8pm. A service honoring a life filled with love and laughter will be held on Wednesday (4/1) at 11am at Kernstown United Methodist Church. In honor of Gary’s flair for fashion, no ties or suits allowed at either service. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Special Love, Inc. or Kernstown United Methodist Church. Isaiah 55:12 “For you shall go out with joy, And led out with peace; The mountains and the hills Shall break forth into singing before you, And all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.”
