Eugene W. Nowak, 71, of Bunker Hill, WV, passed away on Sunday, March 5, 2023, at his home of Lewy Body Dementia.
Eugene was born in 1951 in White Plains, NY, the son of the late Otto John and Sarah Louise Nowak.
Eugene was a lifelong lover of agriculture, showing his green thumbs at an early age. He worked in various agriculture businesses as a young man before earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Horticulture from Delaware Valley College, where he graduated first in his class.
In 1976 Eugene accepted a job on Jefferson Orchard, Kearneysville, WV as an Assistant Orchard Manager.
In 1983 he purchased 40 acres of land in Bunker Hill and started Mayfair Farm. Over the next 40 years, Eugene proved that the impossible was possible through hard work, determination, and a small amount of ignorance. He supported his family through farming with no second income. He took an old orchard and renewed the soil to bear the fruits of his labor in the form of delicious fruits, succulent berries, and crisp vegetables. Mayfair Farm was a founding and anchor member of Freight Station Farmer’s Market in Winchester, VA for 40 years.
He is survived by his wife, Beth, whom he married on November 29, 1975: sons, Daniel Nowak (Kerrie) of Annandale, VA; Erik Nowak (Paige) of Tacoma, WA; Philip Nowak (Dana) of Winchester, VA; grandchildren, Vivienne, Stellan, Imogen, Esme, Otto, Decker, Emma, Jacob; sister, Barbara Morton (Doug) of Yorktown Heights, NY; brothers, John Nowak of Pembroke, KY; and Mark Nowak of Brunswick, ME.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Eugene on Sunday, March 19, 2023 at 3pm at Connections Community Church, 303 True Apple Way, Inwood, WV 25428.
