Ethel Jean Bennett Vernon, 86, of Winchester, Virginia, died Friday, August 22, 2014, in Blue Ridge Hospice Residential Center.
Mrs. Vernon was born in Fall River, Massachusetts, the daughter of the late William and Martha Bennett. She was an Executive Assistant for the Air Force Association, later working with Congressmen Slaughter and Robinson. She was a member of Opequon Presbyterian Church in Frederick County. Mrs. Vernon enjoyed reading, travelling, animals and nature – especially hummingbirds. Most of all she loved spending time with her family.
She married Alfred Belton Vernon, Jr, on June 30, 1946, at home in Westport, Massachusetts. He preceded her in death on May 7, 2012.
Surviving is her daughter Donna Jean Atkins and husband, Robert; son, Donald James Vernon and husband, Daniel Ludwin; and grandson Alan Atkins.
She was preceded in death by her ten siblings.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, one half-hour prior to the service at Opequon Presbyterian church.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 PM on Tuesday at Opequon Presbyterian Church, in the Memorial Sanctuary, with Pastor David Witt officiating. Interment will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park, Frederick County, Virginia.
