Edward Oliver Downs

Edward Oliver Downs, 88, of Mine Run, VA, passed away, June 01, 2010, at Mary Washington Hospital, Fredericksburg, VA.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy and children, Diane Pitts of Manassas, Michael of Mine Run, Patti Payne of Stephens City, Stephen of Inwood, WV, Penny of Mine Run and Joyce; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Edward, Jr. and grandson, Brian Payne.

He loved his country and was a proud World War II veteran, serving in the Marine Corps, stationed in the Pacific during the war.

His passion was golf. During his earlier years, he worked at Congressional Country Club and Burning Tree Country Club in MD and spent over 20 years at Bowling Green Country Club in Front Royal after retiring. He took great pride in passing along his extensive knowledge of the game to his family, as long as he could still beat them by a few strokes.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons: Jason, Jeffrey, Ryan and Garrett Downs, Greg Martin, and Michael Pitts.

The family will receive friends on Friday from 12- 2 PM at Omps Funeral Home, South Chapel, 1260 Front Royal Pike, Winchester. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 PM . Interment will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park with Military Honors by VFW Post 2123.
