John Jacobs left a message on November 1, 2015:
To Ed’s Loved Ones: Ed was my friend and colleague since he joined Shenandoah’s faculty in 1996. I was on the committee that hired him, and for some years we were office neighbors, frequently sharing conversations and a few good laughs throughout the semester. We got along well, I suppose, because we had shared interests and experiences in American blue-collar history, film and the Sixties. As we retired together, I was hoping to spend more time with Ed before he re-settled in Oregon. We had planned to meet for lunch the week he passed away, and I will sadly regret we never got that opportunity. Elaine and Ed’s children, Ed often spoke of you, and of the joy and pride you brought him. I am greatly saddened that he will not have more time with you, time he was so eagerly anticipating. Ed and I spent the summer of 1978 travelling throughout Europe. We must have taken hundreds of pictures between us. It was a great adventure that I treasure. I spent many an hour with him and How at Charly's restaurant in Rosedale. Ed was a good man and fine companion.
