Dorothy B. Arrick
Dorothy May Butler Arrick, age 87, of Winchester, Virginia, passed away on Sunday, October 6, 2013, at Blue Ridge Christian Home, in Bealeton, Virginia.
Mrs. Arrick was born in 1926, in Farmville, Virginia, the daughter of the late Claude P. and Sue A. Butler. She received her nursing degree from Johnston-Willis School of Nursing in Richmond, Virginia. After graduation, Dorothy joined the United States Army Corp as a cadet nurse during World War II from 1943 – 1946. After serving her country, she was employed by Seaboard Coastline Railroad running the New York to Miami route for 20 plus years. She then worked for Winchester Memorial Hospital for over 25 years.
Dorothy was a member of the Braddock Street United Methodist Church, a Lioness with the Winchester Lions Club, McKinley Chapter No. 19 OES, member of the Mad Hatters and the Denim Readers book club. Dorothy was a docent at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley and an usher at Wayside Theatre.
Dorothy married John Downing Arrick on March 17, 1961, in New York City, New York then permanently moving to Winchester, VA, in 1964. He preceded her in death on March 26, 1983.
Surviving are her nieces and nephews, Dr. Sue Ellen Rocovich and husband, John; Bonnie Butler Shealor and husband, Duane; Alfred Wesley Butler, II and wife, Brenda; Nancee Dianne Nelson and husband, Gary; and Amy Louise Butler; numerous great nieces and nephews; and numerous great-great nieces and nephews; and sisters-in-law, Virginia H. Butler and Nancee W. Fleming. Two brothers, Frank Lee Butler and Alfred Wesley Butler, Sr. preceded her in death.
A memorial service will be conducted at Braddock Street United Methodist Church on Thursday, October 17, 2013 at 2:00 PM, with Order of the Eastern Star services provided by McKinley Chapter No. 19, Order of the Eastern Star.
