Dorothy N. “Dolly” Glaize
Dorothy (Dolly) Harrison Glaize, a resident of Winchester, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 26, 2012.
The daughter of George West Harrison and Delia Bryan Harrison, she was born in Petersburg, Virginia on November 24, 1920, and moved to Winchester in 1945 with her husband, Philip Boyd Glaize. She has been a faithful communicant of First Presbyterian Church since arriving in Winchester. Dolly was an active citizen of the City of Winchester, her philanthropic involvements encompassing many aspects of the community. In the 1950s, she was a notable supporter of what later became the Fremont Street Nursery. A well-known green thumb, she twice served as the president of the Little Garden Club and was a founder of the Winchester Tree Commission. She served as a board member of Shenandoah University for over 20 years. She was a founding board member of the Shenandoah Valley Westminster Canterbury and a long-time member of the Junior Century and Century Clubs. An avid golfer, her accolades include Ladies Champion of the Winchester Golf Club and sinking two holes-in-one!
Dolly was predeceased by her beloved husband Philip Boyd Glaize; her daughter, Katherine Glaize Rockwood; her son-in-law, Carroll Chadwick Ballard, Jr.; her brother, George West Harrison, Jr.; and her sisters, Mary Harrison Powell and Delia Harrison Gilliam.
She is survived by her daughter, Dorothy Glaize Ballard; her son, Philip Boyd Glaize, Jr., and his wife, Mary Bruce Hazelgrove Glaize; her son-in-law, Thomas H. Rockwood and his wife, Lucy D. Rockwood; her nine grandchildren; and 5 great grandchildren.
Dolly will be remembered by all who knew her for her love of life, family and friends, and her warm, vivacious spirit.
The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 5:00-7:00 PM at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, Winchester, Virginia.
A celebration of her life will be held 12:00 noon., Saturday, December 29,2012,, at First Presbyterian Church, 116 South Loudon Street, Winchester, Virginia 22601.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church or the Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum, 54 South Loudoun St. Winchester, Va. 22601.
