Donna Sirk Carpenter, 74, of Stephens City, VA passed away on Sunday, January 29, 2023 at her home.

Donna was born in 1948 in Elkins, WV the daughter of the late Lawrence and Joan Sirk. She was a graduate of Elkins High School, Class of 1966 and went on to receive her Bachelor’s Degree in History & Political Science and her Master’s Degree in Social Work, all from West Virginia University. Donna retired as Executive Director of the Laurel Center in Winchester, her career spanning from 1987 to 2015. She loved to travel, read, and most recently spent time making cards for veterans. Donna loved her cats and dogs. She was an avid WVU fan and genealogy enthusiast. Donna’s greatest joy was spending time with her family.

She married Arthur Lee Carpenter, Jr. on August 3, 1974 in Clarksburg, WV.

Donna is survived by her husband Arthur; daughter, Tracy Anne Knight (Jason) of Stephenson, VA; son, Michael Kent Carpenter of Myrtle Beach, SC; grandchildren, Caden W. Knight of Stephenson, VA, Collin L. Knight of Stephenson, VA, Harley Carder of Morgantown, WV; sister, Christie Mentzer (Doug) of New Boston, MI; brothers, Stephen Sirk of Toledo, OH, David Sirk (Bonnie) of Cinncinati, OH; and canine companions, Maggie & Jack.

She is preceded in death by her parents and sister, Sherry Anne Sirk.

A visitation will be Friday, February 3, 2023 from 6pm to 8pm held at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.
A service will be Saturday, February 4, 2023 at 2:00 PM at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.

Donna was the oldest child of my Dad's best friend Don Sirk. The Sirks were our family. Donna was the oldest, my brother John was next, then Steven, Sherry, David, Me (Peg), then my brother Frank, Christy Sirk and my brother Tom. Growing up, I vaguly remember Donna as she was 7 years older than I. I do remember her mother talking about how she was always looking out for the underdog, so it is not a surprise that she was a social worker. I remember thinking that she was great and I wanted to be like her! I am also a social worker....Thanks Donna for lighting the way for the rest of us!

So sorry to learn of Donna's passing. We both loved having Donna and Art as part of our church. She was a very loving and compassionate person. She will be missed by all who knew her. Our prayer are with her and her family.

So very sorry to hear of Donna's death. She was a lovely person who was a tireless advocate for the Laurel Center. When I was a reporter in the valley, she always had time to talk and share information. I'm sure the warm memories of all who knew her will bring comfort in the days ahead.

My deepest sympathies to Donna's family and friends. We were Elkins High School, 1966 Classmates. Although I did not know Donna very well, she was always smiling and was a sweet and kind person. May God provide peace and comfort to her family during this sad and difficult time.

Donna was my first real professional mentor and I will always remember her fondly. May God ease her loved ones pain and place his righteous right hand upon them!

So sorry for your loss. For a few years, Donna and I enjoyed sharing memories of Sherry and times spent on Central Street with Virgie. God bless you all.

I worked for Donna when was the The Shelter For Abused Women . I learned so much from her I could write a book. She would say to me I don't understand why these women return to the abuser . I would tell her it's complicated.Donna was excellent at writing grants and running the shelter. I always thought about her. I send my condolences to her husband and children.

I am very sorry to learn of Donna's passing. We have been friends since 1971. We shared a lot of laughs when working together at DHHR and living in Clarksburg. My prayers are with you all.
