Donald Robert Royston’s soul left his earthly body on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, while a patient in hospice at home with his wife Mary Lou by his side. He is now with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, rejoicing as he awaits his wife, Mary, just inside Heaven’s gate.
Don was born on June 12, 1937, at Winchester Memorial Hospital, the youngest child of Gilbert Longerbeam Royston and Margaret Elizabeth Royston. He was raised in a loving home by parents and siblings. He graduated from Clarke County High School. Gifted with athletic ability, he was given a football scholarship to the University of Tennessee in 1956. Unfortunately, an injury prevented him from pursuing that dream and he returned to the family farm.
After dissolving the dairy farm partnership with his brother in 1962, he enlisted in the US Army and served with the Army Security Agency. He spent 13 months in Vietnam and after his discharge as a Specialist 4 in 1965, he worked for the NSA at Fort Meade, MD and the US Army Corps of Engineers before accepting employment with General Motors Parts Division at Martinsburg, WV in 1968.
He met and later married the love of his life, Mary Lou Mason Singhas, while they were both employed by General Motors, and they married on July 20, 1973, in Winchester, VA. She survives him with one stepson, Richard Scott Singhas; nine step-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren and his ten nieces and nephews and their children.
While employed by GM, he attended and graduated from Shenandoah College & Conservatory of Music (now Shenandoah University) with a BS in Management. He then pursued and attained an MBA from Mount Saint Mary’s University in Thurmont, MD. Promotions with GM caused physical movements to Michigan and Florida. He retired from General Motors in Jacksonville, FL on August 31, 1995.
Don is preceded in death by his stepson, Michael Lee Singhas and step-great-grandson, Zachary Scott Singhas.
Don and his wife, Mary, were faithful members of the Christian church. Don served as a deacon and/or an elder and taught bible studies in every church they attended while living in Winchester, VA Martinsburg, WV, Flushing, MI, Jacksonville, Fl, Ocala, Fl and The Villages, FL. Mary stood beside Don as a faithful children’s Sunday school teacher, church ladies nursing home visitor and even served as secretary for one minister.
Don was a Life Member of both American Legion, Post 41 and VFW, Post 9760 in Berryville, VA.
Don was preceded in death by both his parents, brothers, Gilbert Carl Royston and William Walter Royston; sisters, Elizabeth Jane (Betty) Royston and Helen LaVerne Royston Magaha.
A visitation for family and friends will be at 9 am with a memorial service to follow at 10am on Saturday, June 15, 2024, at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel. Interment will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery Mausoleum, Winchester, VA at a later date.
