Donald “Don” Eugene Athey, 83, of Winchester, Virginia, passed away on Monday, April 16, 2018, at Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Athey was born in 1935 in Winchester, Virginia, the son of the late Florence and Harry Evans Athey. He was the retired owner of Athey’s Floor Sanding and Finishing LLC. Mr. Athey was a graduate of John Handley High School, Class of 1954. He was a member of Highland Memorial Presbyterian Church in Winchester, as well as the Winchester Chamber of Commerce and the Boy Scouts of America. He also enjoyed being involved with the Athey Pulling Team. Mr. Athey was a workaholic and had a wonderful personality. He was very talkative and enjoyed being with his children.
He married JoAnn Castleman on June 13, 1954 in Winchester, Virginia.
Surviving with his wife of almost 64 years is his daughter, Dana Athey; sons, Scott Athey (Carolyn) and David Athey (Lisa), all of Winchester, Virginia; grandchildren, Caitlin, Sierra, Lauren, Olivia, Ashley, Brittany, Brianna, Caleb, and step-granddaughter, Felicia. He is also survived by a sister, L. Virginia Athey of Winchester, Virginia.
The family will receive friends from 6 pm to 8 pm on Friday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1 pm on Saturday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel with Reverend Charlie Franks officiating. Interment will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery, Winchester, Virginia.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Shenandoah Area Council, Boy Scouts of America, 107 Youth Development Court, Winchester, Virginia 22602.
