David C. Mahan
David Campbell Mahan, 72, of Stephens City, Virginia died Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at his home.
Mr. Mahan was born in 1942, in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Charles S. and Mary A. Mahan. He was a graduate of Morgantown High School, Class of 1960, and West Virginia University and was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He was employed as District Manager for Stroehmann Bakery until his retirement in 2003 after more than 25 years of service. He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church, as well as the Deep Creek Yacht Club and Phi Kappa Psi fraternity at WVU.
His wife, Mary Jane (Farrell) Mahan, whom he married on June 6, 1964, preceded him in death on May 23, 2012.
Surviving are two daughters, Stephanie Mahan and husband, Bruce Lothrop of Stephens City and Meredith M. Chandler and husband, Donald of Crimora, VA; four grandchildren, Monica C. Chandler of Grottoes, VA, Zachary S. Chandler of Crimora, VA, Hannah Lothrop of Stephens City and Connor Lothrop, also of Stephens City; four great grandchildren, Oliver Layton Stickley, Schyler Gage Stickley, Aaron Stickley and Bryce Stickley, and a brother, Charles S. Mahan and wife, Delores Jeffers of Tampa, Florida.
David loved Deep Creek Lake in western Maryland where he learned to sail. He was especially passionate about sailboat racing. He met his wife, Janie, while racing sailboats against her. He raced in national championships in several classes of small boats, and won Rebel nationals twice. He was an instructor at Deep Creek Sailing School, and enjoyed sharing his love of sailing with others, especially young people. He continued sailing and racing with family members until the summer of 2013. Dave was also a dog lover, especially golden retrievers. His “unique” sense of humor endeared him to many and will be long remembered.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Monday at Bethel Lutheran Church with Pastor David Young officiating. Interment will be private.
