Daniel Warner Rainsberger, 86 of Winchester VA, passed away on Sunday, June 15, 2025, Father’s Day, at Hilltop House Assisted Living.
Daniel was born on June 22, 1938, in Winchester VA, and was the only son of the late Philip Rainsberger and Carrie Strosnider. He was a proud graduate of Handley High School and soon after graduation he enlisted into the United States Army from 1959-1962 as a Rifleman Sharpshooter and Army Security Agent. Daniel rose to the rank of Sergeant E5 during his time in the Army. Upon his exit from the military, he started his career as an IRS Agent where he served for 30 years. Daniel was active in his community and served in several civic organizations but was the most proud of his service to his Lord and Savior. Daniel was an elder of First Christian Church, serving where his wife, Reverend Joan Marie Farhood Borland, was pastor. When she became ill with a rare cancer, they moved to Parrish, FL for her to receive care. Daniel sacrificed by leaving his beloved community to join his wife until her passing on January 26, 2024. After her passing, Daniel made the journey back up to Winchester to spend his final year in the town he loved. Daniel talked much about his time playing football for Handley, his Army service, all the fun parades at Apple Blossom, prayer breakfasts with his pals from the church and his military friends that served with him. Daniel loved his home on Kathy Court where he lived with Joan for 20 years and felt that was his favorite location across from the hospital and in the City of Winchester close to all the places he cherished. Most importantly, Daniel loved being a grandfather and loved all the family functions where he got to spend time with his grandchildren who also loved their “Granddaddy” very much.
Daniel is survived by his son, Michael Allen Rainsberger (partner, Julie Bower), from his first wife, Ruth C. Rainsberger, along with his stepdaughters, Candice Marie Borland Smithyman (Adam) and Debra Jean Borland Hodgson (Robert II). He is also survived by his beloved brother, James Bynumn Smith (Brenda). Daniel was survived by his 5 grandchildren, Alexandra Marie Smithyman Knight, Nicholas Raymond Smithyman (Avery), Abigail Hodgson Chmil (Nicholas), Robert Sherwood Hodgson II and Samantha Grace Smithyman Lisenba (Hunter) and 7 great-grandchildren, Asher and Adalyn Smithyman, Lily, Leighton, & Everly Lisenba, and Aria & Sophia Chmil.
A service will be held for Daniel on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, at First Christian Church at 1 pm. Interment will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery with military honors.
