Corey James Smith, 20, of Helendale, California, died Thursday, January 21, 2016, in Tristar Cenntenial Hospital, Nashville, Tennessee.
Corey was born in 1995, in Reston, Virginia, the son of Kevin J. and Melinda Smith. He was a graduate of Musselman High School, Class of 2013, and a graduate of Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics, Class of 2015. He received top honors from the institute for academic proficiency and hands-on performance. Corey was an Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic with General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. He attended New Life Church in Martinsburg, West Virginia. Corey played football at Musselman High School and he liked to go kayaking and fishing. He loved to hunt, tinker on anything, skydive and wasn’t afraid to take risks. He always had the energy to go out and enjoy life, never letting anything hold him back.
Surviving with his parents of Gerrardstown, West Virginia, is his sister, Natasha Segura of Martinsburg; maternal grandmother, Lois Haines of Winchester; paternal aunts and uncles, Mark Brooks, of Newcomers Town, OH, Kathy Sudith, of Missouri, Christine Ware, of Charles Town, WV, Harold Brooks, of Sterling, KY, Suzie Brooks, of Farmville, VA, and Roy Brooks, of Hedgesville, WV; maternal aunts, Linda Strachan and husband, Marshall, of Stephens City, Cindy Lupton of Middletown, Brenda Grill of Augusta, Georgia and Glenda Damko and husband, George, of Winchester.
His maternal grandfather, Sam Haines and his paternal grandparents, Shirley Wiseman and James Smith, preceded him in death.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 28, 2016 from 5:00 – 8:00 PM at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 29, 2016 at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.
Serving as pallbearers will be Tyler Jeans, Charles Ellis, Garrett Spiker, Gary Fishel, J.C. Henson, Tim Horan and Chaz Nedd.
Interment will be private.
