Clara Marie Daugherty peacefully passed away at her home on January 24, 2022 with family by her side.
Marie was born on March 23, 1930 to Shade and Recie Steele in Red Jacket, West Virginia. She was the fourth of seven children. Marie grew up in Mingo County, the daughter of a coal miner. She attended and graduated from Magnolia High School a year in advance, skipping one year. After high school she worked at the Matewan Train Depot.
In 1948 Marie married Ralph Daugherty. They moved to Maryland in 1958 and lived there until 1975. Marie worked in clothing retail sales for several years. In 1975 they moved to Front Royal, Virginia. While in Front Royal, she worked for The Warren Sentinel for many years.
Marie loved working in her vegetable garden. Her pride and joy were her five children, ten grandchildren, and 22 great grandchildren. Marie was known within her family and church community for her luscious strawberry shortcake and homemade potato salad.
Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph, her parents, and numerous brothers and sisters.
Marie is survived by her children, Audrey Akers of Dublin, Virginia, Patrick and Rosemary Daugherty of Richmond, Virginia, Randall and Claire Daugherty of Sebastian, Florida, Sherry Wotring of Winchester, Virginia, and Jennifer and Charles Harper of Front Royal, Virginia.
Marie loved God and her family with a love stronger than words can describe. We will all miss that special love and her prayers for each one of us. She was beautiful inside and out.
Relatives and friends are invited to her visitation Thursday from 10am until her Funeral Service at 11am at the Omps Funeral Home South Chapel, 1260 Front Royal Pike, Winchester, VA 22602.
