Carolyn Jane Anderson Smith passed away peacefully at Greenfield Reflections of Strasburg, VA on June 4, 2018. She had just celebrated her ninety-second birthday on May 24.
Carolyn was born on May 24, 1926 in Flushing, NY to Carroll Post Anderson and Edith Terry Anderson. At age 5, her family moved to Tarrytown, NY where she grew up and graduated from North Tarrytown High School. She was active on several academic teams and was also a cheerleader at North Tarrytown High. It was while growing up in Tarrytown that she would enjoy playing with the children of John Rockefeller, Jr. at their estate “Kykuit” on the Hudson River and sharing the Rockefeller box at Radio City Music Hall. Her father was an accountant for Mr. Rockefeller and his uncle, Frank Staley, was a personal adviser to Mr. Rockefeller on investments and real estate.
Upon graduation from high school, Carolyn entered an 18 month management training program for Best and Company of Fifth Avenue, NY. After completion of the program, she became a buyer and manager for Best and Company at their 5th Avenue store. Not long after that, she was tasked with directing the establishment and opening of Best and Company’s White Plains, NY store.
On May 25, 1952, Carolyn married Kenneth E. Smith of Westchester, NY in the Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow, NY. The next day, they moved to Winchester, VA where Ken had taken a position as a zone manager for G.M.A.C. Two years later, Ken started his State Farm insurance agency. Over the next forty plus years, Carolyn and Ken travelled the world and particularly enjoyed their island home in St. Maarten, N.A. Ken retired in 1995 and passed away in November 2012 after sixty plus years with Carolyn.
Carolyn enjoyed a successful and rewarding life in her own right. After moving to Winchester and leaving Best and Company, she became involved in local garden and bridge clubs and civic organizations. She and Winchester friend Carol Ebert had their own radio show on WINC called “Carol and Carolyn” in the mid 1960’s and Carolyn went on to gain considerable notoriety for her gardening and silk flower arranging skills. Her decorating and landscaping abilities were admired by many.
Carolyn is survived by her only child, son Kim, and his wife Beth of Frederick County, VA.
